The watch is not new as this very special version in steel was already introduced in 2011, but not in Basel. There had been some (quiet) rumors about a piece like this at the fair, only.
The (first) Ref. 5004 was
already introduced in 1996. The sophisticated and outstanding complication,
plus the (relatively) low production number per year made it highly
collectible. Some collectors called it “Hamburger” because of the thickness,
but most would have loved to get one. Would I like to see one on my wrist? You
can bet on this
The regular production pieces, the “limited/bespoke” pieces … most of them are gorgeous. There already have been lots of posts, articles … with all the interesting details and therefore I won´t go in detail too much.
After 15 years of production (more or less …) Patek Philippe introduced a final badge of 50 pieces in steel, because of the discontinuation. The 5004 A was a Geneva Boutique exclusive and even when the price tag was not “shy”, the demand was huge.
Some fellow PuristS
already shared their pieces (and some more enjoy it without sharing … - no
offense
) and most of you should have seen it before – at
least on pictures. I was lucky enough to see one in the metal recently and even
better I could take some pictures for you.

The dark indexes are much to my taste, as they add some kind of understatement or shall I even say modernity?

The discreet split co-axial button I also like a lot. For me it is much more than just a “spiced” 3970, but I always had a weakness for "underrated" complications … ;-)

The split chronograph is very difficult to implement on the Lemania based 27-70 and even at Patek Philippe they had a hard time to find a proper solution.

Thanks again to the people who offered me the opportunity to handle it, you know who you are!
Oliver
PS: Forgot to take a wrist shot, believe it or not. Sorry! Was just too distractet ...
