Patek Philippe Big Wooden Box - The definitive guide to different variants and types

Hello all Patek Lovers,

I am a small collector with 4 Patek references - 5035J, 5110J, 5127G, 5296G

I have amassed a modest collection of all things Patek Philippe in order to learn about the great brand Patek Philippe.

The big wooden mahogany type box came out in the mid 2000s - about 2005 or 2006.
It replaced the coffin box for tang buckle pieces and the cube for complications/grand complications.
Basically Patek decided to use the 1 box for most Patek watches - excluding a few like the 24 and super expensive pieces.

Interestingly these boxes were made in Thailand - I have even had these boxes with a made in Thailand sticker on them underneigh (I am not joking).

I have discovered a few vairiations of these boxes.

There are 2 different metal feet.
The sharp corner and the softer corner.
I believe the harder corner was the earlier of the 2 variants.

The other variant is the interrior insert.
The original inserts had a Patek Philippe branded pull tag.  This is used to remove the inner insert from the box.
I believe the insert pull was later dropped.

The next variant is the use of silver and gold printing for the words PATEK PHILIPPE WITH LOGO
Almost all have been in silver/white gold colour.
I do however have 1 box with yellow gold printing.

The final variant is the latest change.  I believe this only occured in 2018.
The interrior of the box has now changed from fake leather to suede.

I find these boxes cumbersome and a bit functionless

Wish Patek would use a similar size like the cufflink boxes for their watches .I don’t know anyone who actually uses these big behemoths

boxes Made in Thailand..??....faked leather??

Patek Philippe..??? someone please, tell us it's not true... we all know, by other brands, at other price categories, that's a standard, sure...but, I thought when you charge beyond maximum, you should also provide 'out of the box (😂)' standards, meaning ...

I agree

There is something about these boxes - looks expensive but feel quite cheap. And no there is nothing wrong with Thailand. But the possibility finest high end Swiss manufacture should rather do a small, wel, crafted wood box made somewhere down the street....

This is quite interesting and original research/scholarship here

of the current Patek boxes. I think they are too large. I would much prefer a fine wooden box in the tradition smaller size so the watch can be stored discreetly in the box and hidden away.
