My girlfriend definitely used to think the same (we have independent incomes though, TBH, and I think we can both be considered "financially responsible")....BUT then....
...after 5.5 years into a relationship with a Patek addict, this Christmas break she suddenly caught the bug too! ;-))
She presented me with a fantastic Rolex OP (and got one in return), and then the day before we flew back to the US, she even purchased her first Patek! 
Now she reads the watch blogs, knows all the Patek references, and.....even started taking wristshots like us addicts! ;-))))

And she's really good at wristshots my friend!! By now my girlfriend certainly knows what MRs are, so I better be careful! ;-)) She also liked the new Twenty-4 so that might, possibly, be her next target... ;-))
