My favourite 5270s
Jun 29, 2021,23:14 PM
When I think about what is my favourite 5270, I find myself torn between the 5270/1r, the 5270p and the 5270j. Each expresses a uniquely different character from the other but all three personalities strongly resonate with me. The 5270j came entirely as a surprise. So many of us were certain that the 5270 lineage would cease with the platinum variant. It was with enormous pleasure that we welcomed a yellow gold interpretation. Primarily because yellow gold, the most classic of all metals, had not been forgotten by Patek Philippe. To shake up the order of releases paid the metal a special attention. It is the most classic of all the 5270s and a direct tribute to its ancestors. It’s a watch that remembers the past while embracing the future. A demonstration of Patek’s understanding of where it came from whilst highlighting their forward looking determination. Not to mention, it looks fabulous on the wrist.
The 5270p? Well… salmon, platinum and Patek; a combination that rarely was more than a dream. A configuration typically reserved for the most special of pieces is now offered as a regular production piece. Delightful! It really never fails to draw a smile to my face when I put it on the wrist. The salmon is on the darker spectrum of shades with a subtle metallic sheen that gives such an explosion of flavour to an otherwise classically discrete piece. With black applied hour markers and script, it’s legibility is as strong as it’s character.
The 5270/1r brings a demanding personality, oozing with opulence, to the 5270 family. The Goutte bracelet is everything but discrete. A breathtaking shine brought to life by meticulous hands brings a distinctly bold flavour. Importantly, comfortability is not sacrificed; it ranks amongst the highest tiers of ergonomics in bracelets. Understanding the character brought by the bracelet, Patek perfectly paired a slightly sunburst black dial. Unusually but most warmly welcomed, the date windows are colour coded to the dial, accentuating the aggressive nature of this intrepid and attractive piece. Between the three I could never choose a single favourite. Each one is my preferred choice on the wrist until I wear the others. For the time being it is the 5270r… until one of the others goes on the wrist.
