It's subjective but...
There are a few reasons.
I have a close friend with a platinum 5004 he got about 3 years ago. Black dial Arabic numerals.
I have handled his watch a few times and here is what I found.
Firstly, the crown and chrono buttons are much smoother on the steel when being used over the platinum.
Now one may argue his watch may need to be serviced, however he contends that's the way it's been for his
watch since day one. Next we have the legibility of the steel dial over black dial as well as the superiority of
scratch resistance of the steel over plat. The steel also has no diamond at 6 o'clock. I prefer it without.
The weight of the steel makes it so easy and comfortable to wear compared to the platinum on a daily basis,
without it feeling too light like some titanium watches.
Finally, the steel watches carry the name of the owner on the crystal case back as we'll as the solid case back.
These are some of the differences I have noted between the A and the P
Whether or not these are significant differences, only you the reader can decide, for yourself!

But I'm sure we are many here who would very often rather take A than G or P. As an example 5170. What could be better than A with the dial of G in black. Best, Kari

For its rarity? I don't buy that. I don't care about rarity. Which really matters to me is the beauty of the watch. The rarity is nothing. Here, no ral difference between the A and the P. If Patek would have chosen a different dial for the A, a dial which...
It is very simple for me:
I am not speaking about rarity or collecting... A chronograph is for me a sportive watch and in such a watch good steel is better than a softer noble metal. At the same time in a beautiful dress watch a noble metal is much better than steel. Diver's watch...
Well, I don't see a Manual Chrono + Rattrapante + QP as a sports watch.
Hence, the use of platinum is not unappropriate. But I agree with you on the rest of your answer. Best, Nicolas

To me, the sports chrono from Patek is certainly not the 5170, but the 5980.
Stainless Steel + Auto movement = Sports Chrono. In my opinion, of course. Soprts chic should I have added! Best, Nicolas

I find 5980 something that does not have the real Patek feeling. But it's because I'm limited. I had this watch for a while and sold it away on Wednesday this week. This watch simply did not turn me on. Best, Kari

... patek considers steel as a noble metal. But they won't convince me that its more than... platinum :) The dial should be different clearly, now there is absolute no point in taking the steel over the platinum

With that beautiful dial, index instead of arabic numerals and in steel...what can you ask more for...perhaps 38mm and not 36? Anyway, I would be very proud to wear that superduper watch!!! Enjoy and congratulations!

I can only imagine the feeling you had first holding it
