How long has this been in the catalog, since early 2000s? What does allocation piece actually mean?

What is your basis for this assertion? I have no reason to disagree; but why do you think this is true?

It seems unlikely to me that it can become an "allocation piece" (at least in the same sense that an out-of-catalog piece is, or even a 5131/5231, which all at some stage require approval of a customer's name), but it's definitely unsurprising that produc... 

Now may be the time for me to step up and finally make the purchase. The little movement in the big case doesn’t bother me.

Other than that, with a 5196 Platinum you'll no doubt purchase a superior piece, whose elegance is forever. ;-) Cheers

small movement isn't a big bother as it has a solid case back & the movement is a very good one in principle. the breaking point is it's pricing - current retail price allows you too think too many other good options available. Best, mahesh.,
