No matter what the brands are thinking or want at the end it needs customers to put money on it. Some ask for gold (or any other precious metals) because it makes the product more valuable for them. Or they just want to be/feel different - not to say superior. Some like the different weight or the different shades from cold to warm. ...
For me (personally) I prefer non precious metals/materials for sports and tool watches, I can imagine each kind of appropriate material on casual watches and prefer precious metals for classical watches - at least most of the time
