I've also been thinking about mixing it up with my straps and favor a more casual look. I have a blue Hodinkee shell cordovan strap on my 5040J, which plays nicely off the moon disc and dresses it down a bit, and a very casual medium brown calfskin strap with cream stitching accents for my 3970R. I'm looking at green croc (for formal occasions) and rich earth tones like burnt sienna calfskin (casual) or even a suede strap in sienna or honey brown (more casual).

Siblings
I always thought of the 3940 and the 3970 as siblings, complementing each other. Same basic style and era but differently executed. Both have a given place in a diverse Patek collection. You could argue though, in the name of diversity, one of them should...
5004 is a big leap, I do not expect that will be on the radar for a while, although it is a very nice watch. The 5970 is redundant having the 3970 imho.
Also dont like the square pushers yet...
Maybe get some Patek straps with the quick release pins
In different and you can switch around as you like. (Iām only guessing they are the same size between the lugs?)
I have the quick release pins but unfortunately the PC is 19 whereas the PPC is 20
But I really should get a few straps anyway.

Switching straps is a lot of fun as you probably already know. However this color is really a great match for both pieces.

I think both pieces are classic. I would suggest having the 3940 to have a small grain (Flank) dark leather strap. The current 3970 strap looks great.
