Got a 5196 Today--Love it!

Dec 30, 2004,03:15 AM

Today, I visited a jeweler in New Jersey, without any intention of buying a new Patek, but buy one I did. I saw the 5196 in rose and yellow gold. I bought the rose gold one with a brown strap. The rose gold on the silver dial is beautiful and understated. I love it! It has a retro look, very clean, with the small second hand above the "6". Sometimes you buy a watch and there is an instant feeling of affection, whereas other watches may grow on a person over time. And some watches just get tiresome after a short time.

I felt an instant affection for the 5196. Curiously, I acquired a 5036 WG model a few months ago and sold it after wearing it only a few times. I never felt that I connected with the watch, as beautiful as it was. The dial looked cluttered to me. I think as time goes by, and I see more watches, I find that I am happy with the clean uncluttered and classy look of the non-compicated watches. When I was younger, I was fascinated by the complications. Now, confirmed in my middle-age, I admire the broad face and minimal adornment of the simple faces. And, on a practical level, who uses his watch to keep track of the month month or day of the week?

OK, I guess when senility sets in, I may opt for an annual calendar again. Bottom line: 5196 is Nice! And I don't think I am going to get tired of it.
