What does one wander? Well, in the pics below there seems to be a distinct difference in color between the platinum case and the slider. To the untrained eye (i.e. mine) the slider has a color closely resembling that of white gold. And if it is indeed whi...  

I would suspect a harder material was selected because it would withstand the rigors of everyday wear better than platinum. I believe denting and peening of the slide could pose a problem affecting the tolerances of the slide within the channel if platinu... 

PP uses wg for the springs bars on the platinum watches as well.

I would also be willing to give this watch a home if the contrasting metals are too undesirable.

So you guys will have to get your own 5078. ;-) Reducing risk of wear of case, gold being softer than platinum, sounds a plausible explanation.

Although Platinum is "harder, gold (especially nickel-alloyed white gold) is "stiffer." To the extent it makes sense to make any mechanical part out of a precious metal, white gold is probably a better choice than platinum.
