What does one wander? Well, in the pics below there seems to be a distinct difference in color between the platinum case and the slider. To the untrained eye (i.e. mine) the slider has a color closely resembling that of white gold. And if it is indeed white gold, why? Surely, such a choice must have been made on technical grounds or at least not commercial grounds.
Certainly appears to be a different color like 18k w/g.

I would suspect a harder material was selected because it would withstand the rigors of everyday wear better than platinum. I believe denting and peening of the slide could pose a problem affecting the tolerances of the slide within the channel if platinum were used.
The longer I wear and observe it, the more I appreciate it. A piece like this is the result of long tradition and many predecessors. Not merely a technical masterpiece but a work of art to boot.
Although Platinum is "harder, gold (especially nickel-alloyed white gold) is "stiffer." To the extent it makes sense to make any mechanical part out of a precious metal, white gold is probably a better choice than platinum.
