My guess is they identified dial printing errors as a reason for large numbers of reject dials, which cost them money, and decided to change the dial accordingly.
However, the new dial setup cost money to create which couldn’t be offset by the savings from having fewer reject dials, hence the itsy-bitsy teenie-weenie price increase on this model which is currently languishing, forlorn, in the marketplace.
