The 2018 Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A versus the Travel Time 5164A

Don't we all have them! Well in my case, it would be "should I pull the trigger on the 5968A?"

After having the opportunity to see one in the metal yesterday and comparing it to my 5164, I have to say that the new chrono version would perhaps compliment my humble Aquanaut collection.

Pros. The similarity [to the 5164] and balance of the dial layout ticks the boxes. Love the orange detailing as how a chrono should be emphasized.

Cons. The thickness at 11,9 and the diameter at 42,2mm of the chrono version. Not a huge fan of the date window, plus the white date dial - it would look more discrete if reversed imho, and perhaps I could live with it.

Each of the function would compliment the other watch - I just have to wear them on each wrist! Hahahaha...

Please excuse my poor attempt to photograph these babies smile

5164A - better 'use' of the function unless you're timing poaching egg ;-)

someone said, **Choice is just an action of jumping between dilemmas** Best, mahesh.,

Poaching an egg is no laughing matter…

On that basis it could swing it for me !

I love poached eggs! But it has to be 3/4 cooked...

Never got it perfect before i.e. golden yellow to runny when cut. Perhaps with the 5968 I could...

Just the way I like it …

Wholemeal toast and grilled pancetta on the top.

Exactly!

I've never timed anything in my life, ever... an I must say that it'll be a very expansive way to time poaching egg. But chronos are seldom bought to time stuff... do you think?

I was there with you

so I know it is no contest - the 5164A is you and suits your wrist as if it was a bespoke watch.

Owh I LOVE my 5164!

But the chrono would be a nice addition no?

I love YOUR 5164A too!!! :-)

 By: sham1 : June 21st, 2018-08:23
Yes the chrono would be a nice addition but the prices have gone a bit crazy in typical Nautilus tradition!

looks great i like the chrone a bit more due to the orange markers however

practically the regular 67 is the one which suits for aquanautic experiences since I m not happy at all with those pushers( maybe my OCD but non WR push buttons on a diver must be either screwn down or shouldn t be at all )

Yes, the orange hands and ‘rails’ really sets it apart doesn’t it?

The colour does accentuate the overall design imho.

You really should when the opportunity arises

A tad thicker and larger than the 5164 but I’m guessing you’ll love it. Hope you’ll get to see one soon 🤞🏻

Tough choice.

I like both watches and choosing just one would present quite a dilemma. The good news is both watches look terrific on your wrist. Short of buying both, I can't help you. Sorry. M4

I already have the 5164 for a couple of years now

The dilemma is, should I get the chrono version too. A nice problem to have if funds are unlimited but I have still some boxes to tick from my bucket list. Lol.

The 5164A for me.

I’m also not a big fan of the white date window. Best, Thomas

Thanks for your thoughts Thomas.

I do wonder how would the overall dial looks like if the date disc is of the same colour/shade of the dial itself and the fonts in white.

+1

What surprises me that many “Patek connaisseurs” seem not to have a problem with the white date window? 🤔 Best, Thomas

If the size of the new Chrono is a con for you and....

 By: nafetS : June 21st, 2018-02:56
you've already got the travel time and are Happy with it, I wouldn't get the chrono, unless you want to collect all Aquanauts (including 5167,....) If I have two watches, which are aesthetically very close together, in my collection, I always end Up only ...

You have a point there. To me it is about the symmetry of the dial first and second, the complications

So one dual time and another chrono Aquanaut might be a good idea after all? Love the rubber strap as it’s very comfortable on extended wear too.

I may just get away with the size but that's the one thing pulling me back Nico

Wonder if PP can custom the date disc just for me? So, if you are reading this Mr. S; I would really appreciate receiving a PM 🤞🏻😃 One can wish... and hope can’t one? Pretty please Mr. S.

I was thinking about the chrono ever since it was presented at the Basel fair but

when I had the chance tp put it on my wrist in real I stopped thinking immediately and ordered it. I own the 5164A as well since many years and it became one of my favourite Pateks. The new chrono is a stunner with its sporty colours and look. The white d...

Thank you for your response 😃

I like it that you have no qualms on the date window and you are right in pointing out that the white date disc corresponds to the 9th hour marker thus visually balancing the whole dial... Looking forward for your posts and photos on the incoming chrono.

Love them both!

Best part about PP is your money is always there. There is no worst case scenario. Keep it, sell it, flip it you can always get your money back!!!

The problem

Where to get the money in the first place haha!

You know whats nicer than the 5968A? Any Stainless Steel Royal Oak Offshore for half the price.

royal oak offshore

looks like frankenstein's oversized wrist watch:: )

Not really....

 By: HorologyMiami : June 26th, 2018-08:21
5968a is listed at 42.2mm and a case thickness of 11.9mm while the 42mm Royal Oak Offshore reference 26170ST is listed at 42mm and a thickness of 14.3mm... Does 2.4mm really make the offshore that much more oversized than the 5968a?

Is 5968A much bigger than 5164A?

 By: mj23 : June 21st, 2018-13:01
Hard decision but at least you got an opportunity to consider. 😄👍

I love my 5164 as it wears perfectly on my wrist :)

 By: KamalRostov : June 26th, 2018-00:42
You are right on that the 5968 is a tad larger but she is beautiful indeed!

Although the 5968 is quite thick, it is very...

catchy with its orange rubber strap which complements well the south east asia tropical weather !
