Stek presents a classic 'luxury problem' for Patek Philippe enthusiasts, deliberating between two highly coveted Aquanaut references: the 5164A Travel Time and the 5968A Chronograph. This post invites the community to weigh in on the aesthetic and functional merits of each, sparking a lively debate among collectors.

Good eventing to all,

Start of a luxury problem. I just bought an aquanaut 5164a but yesterday in Geneva I visited the Patek store. Heaven for all Patek enthausiasts. In the store a had the luck to wear a lot of Patekโ€™s Iโ€™m interested in. One of the pieces was the 5968a. Stunning watch! Hereโ€™s where the question arises. Should I go for the 5968a or stick to the 5164a?

About the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5164

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5164, known as the Travel Time, introduces a dual time zone complication to the Aquanaut collection. This reference maintains the distinctive rounded octagonal case shape and integrated strap design characteristic of the Aquanaut line, while adding practical functionality for travelers. It represents a more complex offering within the Aquanaut family, catering to those who require a sophisticated yet robust timepiece for global use.

The 5164A-001 variant features a stainless steel case measuring 40.8 mm in diameter and 10.2 mm in thickness. It houses the self-winding caliber 324 S C FUS movement, which provides a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers water resistance up to 120 meters. The dial is typically black embossed, and the watch is secured by a composite strap with a fold-over clasp.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a Patek Philippe with a practical complication suitable for daily wear and travel. Its stainless steel construction and composite strap make it a durable option compared to more formal complications. The Travel Time function, indicated by two skeletonized hour hands for home and local time, along with day/night indicators for both, positions the 5164 as a highly functional piece within the broader Patek Philippe sports watch catalog.

I believe there's not a right/wrong decision there. In my case, I wouldn't let my 5164A go for any other Aquanaut. Perfect proportions on my wrist, comfortable and versatile like hell, useful complication, sporty enough to take it to the pool in summer and classy enough to wear it with suit and tie on a daily basis. But if you prefer something sportier and you don't really need the travel time function, then 5968 is your watch. And it's new and kind of hotter nowadays, which some people value as

That is the excact the same reason for to by the 5164a. Dual time zone for traveling handy for means the measurements as well. There was however something in me that said......

If I had the choice, I would go for 5968A even if I don't really have much use for a chronometer. I have seen 5968A in the grey market going for more than double the retail price at present. That is also something to consider.
