Patek 3970 vs. Patek 5270

 By: Bob L. : April 16th, 2018-11:14
Not too long ago, I posted a picture of my 3970R. It's a beautiful watch, and a classic perpetual chronograph. I've been wondering, however, whether I would get more use out of a 5270R. It's a big larger, of course, but also more modern looking and featur...

Hi Bob!

I am partial to the 3970 for the following reasons: 1. It is a great size at 36.5mm and I feel it fits your wrist better, 2. The movement fills up the case back much better than in the 5270R One area that the 5270R triumphs over the 3970R is the absolutel...

Hi Bob. Lovely 3970r you have there.

Iā€™m a bit confused as to why you think you may get more use out of a 5270?? I think it may be a bit big for your wrist from the picture you have posted. Whilst the more use question is a difficult one for me to help you with Iā€™m amazed that someone who cl...

No contest!!!

3970 all day everyday... 5270 is too big and bloated in my humble opinion. Nothing will beat the refined elegance of the 3970 (well maybe a 2499! lol).

No 5970? OK, a confession . . .

I have been "collecting" watches for many years. Over the last year, I have substantially reduced the size of the collection to enable, in part, a focus on my favorite line -- the Patek perpetual chronographs, which include my two favorite complications. ...

Ah, I see!!! You also have the 5004? So, in this case, the 5270 is a reference to get to complete the collection. But it is my less favorite among these 4.

I prefer the case of the 5970 and the dial, too. I am not very fan of these 2 holes on each side of the date moon phase sub dial. But it is just me!

Makes a little more sense now Bob.

Iā€™d still like to know with the other Watches you have which are fabulous by the way why you think you will get more use out of a 5270???? Would I swap a 3970r for a 5270r if I were you????? No i would buy a 5270r as well. M.

Thanks, Miles . . .

The group is limited to four watches, so simply adding a 5270 is not an option for now. Your question, "why get more use?" is a fair one. Perhaps it wouldn't get any more use. But it might be a more modern, robust watch so I'd be less concerned about wear...

Keep the 3970. It sits much better in your collection.

Wear it as much as you can and enjoy it. Even take it for a swim šŸ˜‰ Miles.

Stunning.

But the 5270 has no place in that collection of legendary watches.... my 2 cents.

I would get the new bracelet version.

That would add a nice variation to your collection.

Gorgeous collection you already have, wow! Now for the next one to come...

I find your collection not only really impressive with the most sought after perpetual chronos including rattrapante šŸ˜³ but also each choosen with great taste (imho your 3970 R is simply a keeper also among the others of much higher value). Now to come to ...

I have to use my gut

Bob L, I wouldn't be presumptuous to claim any expert knowledge but I can use my gut. I felt more empathy with the older reference 3970. It looks more refined, elegant and 'as one' with your wrist size. It looks like it's not even trying to be sensual, wh...

While 5270R is a lovely piece

And I can see how a modern technically refined version could merit making its way into your collection if four, from a pure aesthetic perspective I find the 3970 balances out more. However I can see how you are hesitant l, but since you have a 5204 alread...

Bob, this is a nice problem to have šŸ˜€

I'm not sure anyone can really help you make this decision in the end, but for the pittance it's worth I'd suggest the 5270R best fits in your impressive collection. My rationale - which we all know is of utterly no use in such matters! - is that the 5270...

If I am correct,

 By: CL : April 16th, 2018-19:17
your 3970R is a 2nd Generation? If yes, I think it is a total keeper. Also, 5270 has only ONE nice version, which is the 5270P. So if you want to just keep to RG piece, I think the only one that you should consider is 5020R. It's difficult choice. But I c...

Keep the second series 3970R

You won't go wrong if you add the more modern version

5270r. Its just if you want to and can part with the money to go for it. My opinion. Cheers, either of the 2 you have got a winner. For a collection. Geross.

Thanks for all the helpful comments so far!

At this point, I am leaning in the direction of keeping the current lineup of four -- that is, sticking with the 3970 and not replacing it with a 5270. All of the points noted in the responses are very helpful. I'll keep mulling it over, for sure, but the...
