I think this is a great post -- feeling what you felt in front of a watch is the main reason why our hobby is so fascinating! ;-) Hope you'll pull the trigger on the 5170J one day! Cheers. [nt]

Doha, Qatar 5170J

Full length Wrist full Wrist full 2 Wrist 1/2 covered Having only researched online, the 5170 variant I thought I would find least desirable was the yellow gold (J) with Roman numerals and Pulsation dial. I rarely have the opportunity to visit a Patek AD,...

No doubt

There is no doubt that this watch, including its variations, is an incredible beautiful superb watch. But, there is always a but, it is no longer without competition. There are others like ALS that have come up with similar watches at same high level. So ...

The 5170J looks wonderful on you. Here’s mine...

Beautiful and very smart on you

I had the same experience!

Had always thought this version the least desirable, until only *very* recently handling one, and, just like you, realizing A. It is a brilliant watch B. My online-photo-based preferences are bunk.

I enjoyed comment B😀

Yes, I certainly get full of myself watching Patek vs Lange vs fill-in-the-high end watch house. As if I could just walk in and buy one like I am comparing televisions at big box stores. The 5170 references are all beautiful and represent an outrageously ...

I am (as with most things) ambivalent.

Last year, I found myself willing and able to acquire a pretty decadent watch, a 5960a. Decadent in that it was a *lot* more money than I'd ever spent on a watch before *and* decadent in that it's no under-the-radar-shrinking-violet-only-connoisseurs-will...

Why did you sell it? [nt]

Ah, my good Blau...

“It is a self-deception of philosophers and moralists to imagine that they escape decadence by opposing it. That is beyond their will; and, however little they acknowledge it, one later discovers that they were among the most powerful promoters of decaden...

What is that, Nietzsche?

Whoever it is, they've got a point. So how do I promote decadence by opposing it? Here's one thought: my opposition of it, my fearful and constant looking out for it in all my ways, in fact elevates it. By treating it as that which must be always recogniz...

yes, Der Wille Zur Macht

Your reading of the great man's words is as good as any. On the other hand, just because Nietzsche said it doesn't make it true. Particularly if the quote in question appeared in fragmentary manuscripts written just before the onset of his full-blown deme...

thanks for sharing Blau

I enjoy learning of experiences like that. Very value added.

The price was $76k USD which I suppose is fair, if not somewhat pricey.

But, no, I'm not in a position to pull the trigger. I'm still in a honeymoon phase with my 5712/1A which I rarely get to wear. As for this recent visit in Doha... I'm here for a while for work and when I'm in a city that has a Patek AD, I like visiting an...

Yes, so true.

On Chrono24 for example - $76k USD (or less) could get my prefered 5170 Rose gold with white dial or with black dial.... or the White Gold with white dial or with black dial.

If it were available with the same dial...

and hands of the 'R' version I would buy a 'J' version in a second...but it's not. I think yellow gold really adds to the classic nature of this watch. I tried one on this past summer in Manhattan and it fit my 7.25" wrist perfectly. It is a very elegant ...
