Finishing & Tactile Feel ...

Sep 15, 2015,01:51 AM

Although I do not have the earlier Plat version or seen one, my understanding is that Patek finishes its watches to a single standard irregardless of the casing metal.
The tactile feel of the pushers does loosen up a bit after a few applications, but compared to the Dato Mk2 which I expected it to approximate but perhaps not completely match, it was a day and night difference - between buttery smooth and notchy.
Similarly, the finishing compared to the Dato is again way behind in terms of the workmanship and decoration. They are producing too many watches to be realistically be able to maintain a super world-beating no holds barred standard that I believe used to be their philosophy and the pride that went into each watch they used to make some decades ago.
If I read the subtle messaging coming from Patek, they are telling us that their new in-house calibres are designed to be easier to make, so that production can be pushed and their margins can be improved.
I have the 5960/1A for its combination of useful complications and not so much as the pinnacle of watchmaking that I used to take pride to wear on my wrist.
They should really do something about that horrendous shiny bracelet. Again, although it is practical, it is an eyesore and I have yet to hear a consensus of good opinion on that point. As cosmetically enhancing as a huge wart on the nose of Sleeping Beauty!

5960a, NOT 5960/1a...

I have to admit that the SS bracelet is VERY comfortable. Having said that, the polished bracelet is still a little too attention grabbing for my taste. I tried a few different strap variations and I think I'm finally getting close to one that I like... I...

Bravo, Jester. Super nice combo, much nicer than this damn steel bracelet.

I love it so much that this may be one of the few modern Patek I could add in my meager collection. Bravo. Nicolas

I think there will be plenty on the used market

If you can live without new.

Is it necessary to the used market?

This watch appears at least on Patek's home page. When I bought it a couple of months ago, it was not difficult to get. Best, Kari

No. I have the strap

this strap color and texture fits so well with your PP! Bravo! :) Cheers Robin

It must be really fun playing with strap textures and colors on this reference

I like that 5960/A very much since I tried it and there are so many possibilities with straps. Thanks for sharing your experience again and again Jester! Cheers, Mark

Like it!

I like it a lot. Nice combination there. Have a good one.

I must say that although I do love the dial design (which raises the heckles of the traditionalists), tactile feel of the pushers is a disappointment vs other handwound column wheel chronos. And the movement finish cannot be said to be class leading any l...

Agreed on the movement decoration and on the bracelet ( Breitling Chronomat.. )

 By: amanico : September 13th, 2015-08:07
Excellent! The main value of this chrono is its coolness. you want more refined? Go for a JLC Duometre or a Lange Dato first generation, or a Montblanc Villeret. As for the pushers, I will have to try one in the real life. As for the bracelet, I totally a...

Agree on the push buttons...

 By: Jester : September 14th, 2015-20:08
I was a bit disappointed as well. I compared the pushers on my 5960/1A vs. 5960P and they both felt similarly 'hard'. By no mean comparable to the likes of 5070. Now regarding movement finishing, do you feel that the movement finishing on the steel versio...

Is this reference going out of production already or...?

 By: willski : September 15th, 2015-19:58
I'm quite a fan of this reference, but reading the comments above it seems that PP have (or are going to) stopped production? Or am I (hopefully) interpreting things incorrectly?

The replacement of this movement/reference

 By: Jester : September 15th, 2015-21:20
Ref: 5905 has already been announced since the Basel fair in April this year so it's fair to assume Patek are just casing the remaining 5960 movements in SS case, making it affordable to shift the stocks.

+1 on all counts. [nt]

No official announcement yet.

However, as the other 5960 versions (gold, platinum) have been discontinued and some are thinking the new 2015 5905 reference can replace the 5960 line-up, it may be true. Just a guess. Cheers, Mark

I enjoy having everything 100% PP, including the strap.

However, this combo is quite nice. The bracelet is quite ostentatious but it's a beauty swinging both ways. So, congrats and ENJOY!

I prefer that way too

BUT the strap selection from most of the manufacturers are far from satisfactory hence I had no choice but to use my imagination.
