Actually, there are worst cases, the 5959 is actually based on an old Victorin Piguet ebauche made for a ladys watch long time ago (they claim they did it from scratch). Besides it haven't hack seconds, the minutes counter is a continuous one (not even a semi-instantaneous). Interesting for a watch that is supposedly be done up to the highest standards (and far from cheap).
I believe those are the trade offs that the brand is taking in order to keep the old tradition alive. There are some brands which are more into the practical issues (Lange for Instance) and less on traditional ways of doing stuff if this compromises functionality.
