Thierry had said "No, this is really Tiffany's decision. We don't have any say". It also states Arnault and Stern set out to identify who among the underbidders had a strong enough buying history to purchase the watch. After blessing from Geneva, Arnault emailed Lu. It does not make any sense to me why Thierry was involved in selecting who would purchase the watch if he didn't have any say.

Key takeaway on the article is now he has future access to ALL Tiffany stamped references… he will probably milk it for all it’s worth: Lu says. "I don't push too hard, but this opens up the door for me to Tiffany America, and to Tiffany Patek.…”

Thanks for this article ! Why did the original

winner not complete the transaction?

 By: Patekfinity : January 28th, 2022-13:46
Question is…Was there even an actual winning bidder?? Maybe this was all choreographed to maximize publicity… This Zach Lu was an early collector since 15 yrs old?!? I was still in high school and wearing a Timex at 15. What has the world become?? It’s no...

Is this same guy?

 By: Clueless_Collector : January 28th, 2022-14:24
If so, probably work just for fun, since he loves watches and collecting since age 15. I don’t think Phillips pay that well to afford all those 7-figure watches. ...

Inside job?!?

 By: Patekfinity : January 28th, 2022-14:32
Ha!! Works for Phillips and won their auction?? Kinda suspicious if you ask me when Aurel said “bid from the gentleman in the room…” when Aurel is very well aware of who he is?? I mean…the guy works for the same company AND in the watch department neverth...

Considering past events / history of Patek bidding, you are probably very much correct. jmho

This all is so ridiculous

 By: tempus : January 28th, 2022-14:50
Beside that marketing and „milking the cow“… That watch is so ugly, I couldn’t care less! 5740 is such a beauty, but that 5740 for Mr A. is the epitome of ugliness. Sorry, just my two cents… Best Tempus

Me too, me too...

My take is they knew perfectly well

 By: Gwai : January 29th, 2022-20:03
what they were doing yet underestimated their readers' scrutiny. (Not mine, to be clear.) They must have known details would come to light anyway and were doing their best to try to frame it - and be fast about it, too. Well, didn't quite work out.

Yes, just a shame...

Under Phillips' rules, this isn't the case

 By: waitlisted : February 3rd, 2022-08:11
If the winning buyer doesn't pay, Phillips has discretion over whether and how to resell the lot, including via a private sale. There is no obligation to offer it to the second highest bidder.

Good to know.

Conflict of interest…

 By: Patekfinity : January 29th, 2022-13:42
Maybe the winning bidders found out the underbidder was a consultant for Phillips and had artificially inflated the bid?!? All dropped out and Mr. Lu ended up being the bag holder, albeit a rich one whom had the resources to make the purchase. (If he is i...

possibly the winning bidder realised he had been scammed by fictitious inside bids driving the price up and then bailed. Once the fictitious bidder was eliminated then Lu could well have

There is no logic. Perhaps they just underestimate their readers and consumers. 😉

i took the pictures for this article and also was present when the subject was interviewed

It's not my place to comment in detail but I will say for certain that there wasn't any calculated attempt on Hodinkee's part to deceive anyone - these were the facts as reported to us by the subject and corroborated by Phillips, and I certainly detected ...

I try to summarize my thoughts and feelings.

Dear waitlisted, thank you for your statement, which I am quite sure is with the best of intentions. I also immediately believe that you and HODINKEE have done everything with the best of intentions. No one who does not have the appropriate insider knowle...

I am glad you brought up the point about Value

As a long time collector of Patek, I am also a bit puzzled and worried about recent moves it made.
