Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A: the Rolls-Royce of the toolwatches!

 By: Dje : May 27th, 2010-13:40
If you read only my title you may have two opportunities to miss the truth about this watch. The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A is a watch, not a car or a tool! But you know that! I do the comparison with a Rolls-Royce and you may take it for a watch for...

 By: amanico : May 27th, 2010-13:57
I took it with me in the Seaside, in the Country, at some gatherings, and even on a roof... Like you, I had to see it in the flesh before being convinced. Like you, its dial captivated me. Like you, I'm thinking about adding another one in my collection, ...

That's that very same watch that convinced me first!

 By: Dje : May 30th, 2010-11:22
Hi Nicolas, You know that it's your 5712 that caught me first. Then I "discovered" the simpler charms of the 5711/1A. So you miss it? Cheers Dje

It will be on the 5980... To me, the 5980 is the ultimate expression of the Naulilus, its sporty spirit. With Time passing, I was not very comfortable with the moonphase, as I had to set it every time I gave this watch some wrist time. But the 5711 bis an...

This is probably the most poetic review...... The funny thing is that I was thinking pretty much on these lines a few days ago...... when I placed my order for one.... whether it comes sooner or later.... it matters not so much..... as it is a timeless on...

Congratulations, PP

 By: RJW : May 27th, 2010-17:23
The first time I saw the 5711/1A in a Patek catalogue a few years ago, I wasn't interested. But then I decided I wanted a "Rolls Royce" (as you say) to wear as a daily watch that would not bring undue attention to itself at work or in public. This was my ...

I love your watch!

 By: Dje : May 30th, 2010-11:26
Hi I'm glad to read you as it will be probably a one shot opportunity to wear a PP for me. Your pics are very appealing. Thank you for sharing. Cheers Dje

TOOL WATCH!!!???

 By: Mostel : May 27th, 2010-20:52
as always, wonderful photos, always enjoyable... but puh-leeeease!!! A tool watch??? That Nauty Lus (funny Nicolas) is a dress watch in sportswatch clothing... I owned one, so I can say it. A lovely watch... pretty cool. But a TOOL WATCH!!!!???? Okay I'm ...

Have to agree with Mostel

 By: MartinGreen : May 28th, 2010-01:09
The Nautilus is without a doubt a very impressive and well made watch but the term tool watch takes it perhaps a bit too far. That is like taking your Rolls to the local Home Depot to get some lumber and nails... Of course it is possible.... Kind of remin...

I know I know

 By: Dje : May 30th, 2010-11:29
Hi, Of course you're right, but what would be the point for me of owning a 3939 or 5959 if it was to let it in the bank! The watch that fits me is a tool watch, the 5711/1A is the one. Cheers Dje ps: it would be nicely complemented by a 5170 though!

In total agreement....

Thank you but it's not done yet!

Your post puts into words how most of us 5711/1A owners feel about what is undoubtedly the most elegant and understated steel "sports" watch on the market today. Its longevity--introduced in the 1970s--attests to its timeless quality. Although perhaps not...

 By: hans_jorgen_1968 : May 31st, 2010-01:00
As I understood on a interview i read (in a german watch magazine) he rarely/never wears a watch at all. He doesnt want to make this -keeping time- beeing a hazzle and move him away from his creative thoughts Cheers Hans

more versatile then tool, IMHO

 By: Hororgasm : May 31st, 2010-11:40
love the watch. still kept in right proportions unlike the other Genta creation the APRO, which has mothed into a monster size. the 5711 is a really versatile watch and suit most occasions...under the sleeves, in tees, business suit etc etc.

5170

 By: rogerfrancois7 : May 31st, 2010-12:57
Hi DJe- If you were to choose between the 5025 & 5170 which one would you choose, I would like see what do you think please advise Many thanks Roger

Do you mean 5205 and 5170?

 By: Dje : May 31st, 2010-13:40
Hi, Do you mean 5205 and 5170? If that's the case it's hard to compare those two. Given the choice I would take the 5170 everyday. But it's worth twice the 5205 price. The 5205 is a very appealing watch but the 5170 is a top notch manual wind chronograph ...

 By: Dje : June 1st, 2010-00:36
Hi, I love the 5170 for its design (calibre and watch). Still an automatic chronograph makes sense with an annual calendar, and such a watch can be considered an everyday watch and consequently the automatic winding is useful and justified IMO. I would ad...

I would say that.....

 By: MiniCooper : June 1st, 2010-03:28
5960 combines everything.... granted, it is a bit thick, but it may also be worn as a dress watch.... (not as much as 5070 or 5170) Personally I prefer manual watches so I would want it to be manual..... Cheers

It's up to you

 By: Dje : June 1st, 2010-03:41
Hi Andreas, It's upt o you! Ideally I would not wear a watch as thick as a 5960P with a suit, but it's very personal. Cheers Dje

True.....

 By: MiniCooper : June 1st, 2010-09:19
It is personal..... I wonder, how many, like me, consider it more dressy than casual... Cheers

Over the past few years, I've been collecting pateks but recently sold off all of my collection (5070g, 5960p, 5130p, etc) to focus on independents. Yes, it's true but I just lost the pp feeling... even sold my nautilus collection like my 5980 (too thick)...
