"Dear watch lovers,  We are very proud that PuristSPro.com has created a Seiko forum and we really look forward to reading what you have to say about our watches and our brand.  We know that the PuristSPro community is very knowledgeable, and we fear that the following may be “preaching to the choir,” but here is a brief history of Seiko.

 Seiko was founded by Kintaro Hattori in central Tokyo in 1881. He was just 21 years old. In the beginning, K. Hattori was just a clock sales and repair shop. By 1892, however, Kintaro had started clock manufacturing and succeeded in producing his, and Japan’s, first wristwatch in 1913. From the very start, Kintaro was determined to be at the forefront of the industry, and his oft-repeated credo was, “Seiko should always be one step ahead of the rest.” Honoring his spirit, Seiko has developed watches that have been at the leading edge of every generation in watchmaking. 


By the 1960’s, Seiko had achieved the world’s highest level of accuracy in mechanical movements. In 1969, we launched the world’s first quartz wristwatch, the Seiko Astron Quartz, whose vastly improved accuracy revolutionized the watch industry. The same year, we created the first automatic chronograph equipped with both column wheel and vertical clutch. In 1988, we released the world’s first quartz watch with an automatic generating system, Seiko Kinetic. In 1998, we created Spring Drive, the first mechanical watch with one-second-a-day accuracy and the uniquely smooth glide motion of the second hand. In 2012, Seiko released Seiko Astron GPS Solar, the world’s first watch to receive and use positioning data from GPS satellites to display the exact local time anywhere in the world with only one touch of a button, using just the power of light. Throughout our history, it has been the interaction of traditional and advanced technologies that has fuelled Seiko’s innovation. Today, we are proud to be the only “manufacture” with four watchmaking technologies: mechanical, quartz, Kinetic and Spring Drive. We will continue to be “one step ahead” and live up to your expectations with our Seiko and Grand Seiko collections  We hope that you will enjoy reading and sharing our history, and experiencing our technology and our passion for the very best in watchmaking.

When I look at all the Seiko watches, clocks and other timekeeping devices, I fear our Forum is like a group of explorers starting at the edge of a vast continent.

(Some brands are like a city park by comparison)

But even if we make just short forays at first, I promise you they will be fine journeys, well-appreciated by good pals. We hope these adventures will be to our mutual advantage.

Thanks Ken for posting this for us!
I have a 12 or 13 year old Seiko Kinetic Auto Relay and that was my watch during college.
(Some of my college mates say it gave me mystical powers as I started as a silly kid but ended up as the valedictorian of the cohort...)

I am glad that Kinetic is still one of the key technologies of Seiko.
For the record my watch has not been serviced once since I bought it and it is keeping excellent time still.
I also wear it for swimming often.

All these Seiko posts are inspiring me to wear my Seiko again and do a post here!
I am also fascinated to learn more about the GS line - they are so rare in Singapore!

I first saw Grand Seikos on a forum in 2003, and as far as I knew then, they were unobtainable.  So that drew me in, and I just like the way the Japanese design watches--they have a way with combining straight lines and curves that I can't describe but really like.
