Why the Rail Dial 1665 is called " Great White "???

My theory is that the popularity of the DRSD was so significant that the shift to an all-white writing dial prompted the need to distinguish it.  In comparison to the DRSD Mk4, for example, the Rail Dial is much rarer. Just as, today, we find a need to give a watch a specific nickname, bruiser, freak, etc, there was a similar need by collectors to give credit to the 1665 Rail Dial... ...Nico i think someone call "Great White" all the white production (to distinguish it from the double rouge), others call the GW only the MK1, but imho the MK2 (Stern) is called only Rail Dial (and it's very cute).

...the so called great white is the white MK1 dial.

.....would you say that the Rail is a subset of the great whites, or not a great white at all?

...to give it a name, it would be enough to call it by manufacturer name...

.....i have certainly heard many people refer to all Mks1-4 as Great Whites.

Case size is 40mm...so identical. However, it is a deeper watch so sits more proud on the wrist. However, this is a feature that makes it quite special ...especially given the domed plexi.

I love 1665s more than any other reference for many reasons...HEV, their place in Rolex history, the history behind the prototypes etc etc But also in that list is the way the watch sits on the wrist....nothing like it in Rolex.

.. those sentiments wave the pattern,
mostly more than the brain ( & wallet),

- but equally or at least sufficient for the heart

...the first production of 1665 (proto, all the patent pendings case and a portion of MK1 / MK2 production): thin case, very similar to 5512/13

...especially the superdome.

MK3 is my favorite DRSD (together with the MK1, of course)

The MK3 is super clean.  Not very common.
