what about

a watch with service papers identifying it as a 5514 and with a serial number dating it to 1977 but with no comex markings on the back or dial?

Were there such watches? Are they 'franken watches' or do they count as genuine 5514's?

This is very scary for me - I can't afford to get it wrong!

Maybe I should go buy a new explorer!!!

Thanks,

Vernon

It would be interesting.....

....to know what the Rolex records say about these watches.

They are probably genuine 5514's.

Definitely not Comex watches.

Most likely never sold or delivered by Rolex.

I'm very grateful for your help, and...

on balance it seems a bit risky buying such a watch, especially given the premium being sought, especially if it's only 'probably' genuine and probably never sold or delivered by Rolex as this gives it a sort of curious no mans land status I think.

It's a shame as it does seem a little special, but perhaps the novice should stick to safer waters.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Vernon.
