Rolex

I wear my green sub a lot. I wear a modern (rrr inside the ring) Daytona black dial...

YET my most treasured watch is a Dufour (sorry for the broken record on this lately) and I am now firmly encamped in staving off all watches, until I own a Roger Smith Series 2 Open Dial... (gimme few years)...

Is it painfully boring to like modern Rolex in our community?

If the answer is yes, it won't change my taste in rightly proportioned, classic, brilliantly finished, rock solid, legible, dependable, perfectly performing watches that smile at me each time I wear them (the Daytona actually more these days..)

Have I become a bore??????????????

Should I stop everything and get a Chocolate Frog?

Clearly you have an appreciation for watchmaking quality, running the spectrum from the best in artisanal craft (Dufour, Smith, etc.) to the ultimate marvel of mass production micro-mechanical excellence (modern Rolex). I think it's both commendable, and understandable. But, perhaps I'm biased as I largely hold much the same in terms of preferences

And you may also mention the Green Milgauss, or the Yachtmaster Joke loves so much to take pictures of ...

The new GMT also deserves such a special mention.

And so on...

with wearing or loving modern Rolex's. Everthing is modern at one point of time until it turns vintage.

In twenty ot thirty years you can write back and ask if there is any harm in lovely the vinatge Rolex's you've had all your life.

I know that my love for vintage Rolex probably makes me posts more about watches from the 1950's to the 1970's...

But there a lots of modern Rolex afficionados here and I encourage you to post about contemporary watches !

I seem to have two interests... everyday watches that make sense.... and masterful independents... I love everything in between--interested in everything above and beyond, too.... but I seem to have settled into a relatively humble appreciation of steel Rolex, knowing they are not incredibly rare and are probably 'too often seen' in the wild... and that they don't say the most expressive or unique things about you... maybe that's why I like them... besides the bulletproof no nonsense feel and performance... I think I like the anonymity of them, to an extent... After years of trying to wear the most expressive watches, the rarest, the finest, etc, etc... I sort of shrugged and just 'put on some jeans'... and relaxed. For me, the big guns are those masters and dreamers ever-improving their art and work.... I come back to them again and again, in amazement. But this is about liking modern Rolex, and yes Jeff, it has the ring of a minor confession... I do love this Rolex forum and read it regularly, but I don't think I have the madness in me to go vintage... which it seems is where this forum's passion lies, and hence my half-joking question! I have two modern steel Rolex amongst my collection and I understand exactly what you are saying. I also understand that urge to explore into different zones. For me it is not the same avenue that you have chosen. I would suggest that you try one thing.... try a Vintage dayto PN or a Mk2 or Mk3 DRSD. I know you said you wanted to venture away from vintage Rolex, but as a guy who loves both, i dare you to stick a PN on your wrist or a DRSD and not get something shooting through your veins .....

I will blame you. If I buy one, I will also be diverging from this whole minimalist reduction of collection strategy.... must.... remain... on track....! Must... resist.... resistance is futile... Who would have suspected an Englishman would plant such passions in the watchworld in 2010??? I certainly wouldn't have! But this is the Rolex forum....

It is a well-known fact that owning a vintage Rolex (preferably PN or DRSD) makes one more attractive to the opposite sex, faster, stronger...and occasionally capable of leaping tall buildings.

and it would only be the latest "state of the art" Rolex - in steel!

I need to get out and mingle with often unpredictable and unruly crowds without the slightest conscious or subconscious feeling that I have to protect The Watch at all times and even at the cost of my own life

Sorry for late reply! Appreciate the support! It's almost an identity crisis as a collector to 'relax' this much... but who can deny I'm always on the hunt for something ultra special even as I try to curb my appetite!

Wearing that 'simple' Daytona lots and lots. The more fingerprints and real life that gets on it, the better it looks to me....
