Rolex

Hi,

Years after years I've been thinking about getting a Rolex (in the last 20 yeasr at least).

I've long looked after the Sub date, then knew that I don't like the Rolex date loupe.

I thought about the Daytona then, but it was in the same time too expensive at that time for me, and too obvious. I generally don't like watches too fashionable!

I then long thought the Explorer 1 was my choice but each time I see a simple Sub (no date) I'm appealed.

The 5513 could have been perfect. I had a close Tudor 94010 that I loved, but sold it to finance my Amvox1 because I wanted a Rolex calibre! On the contrary I'm more than annoyed by the Rolex policy on servicing vintage watches. If I get a 5513 I want tritium! Shame on me! And I want a Rolex to be my tool watch, the watch I can forget on my wrist, the watch I can do everything with (diving, swimming, gardening, ....). So I want to be able to get it checked by a Rolex AD and serviced by Rolex.

The 14060M seems to be the obvious choice to me. Some tritium 14060 have tempted me (my brother in law has a nice yellowed tritium 14060 that tempts me a lot) but the Rolex service problem will come sooner or later, and probably sooner. And I love the calibre in the M version, the Breguet overcoil, the crossing bridge!

I'm not too tempted by the current COSC version. Too much on the dial for nothing, and these inner "Rolex" inscriptions are not my cup of tea!

Did I miss something or am I in the right way?

I'm still at work, it's warm enough for the beach but I can't go, and there are too many people still on holiday to be efficient, too many subjects I can't work on!

The guy sitting in front of me last dinner had the same one!

He is a good friend of mine.

That's mainly thanks to his watch that I know I don't want the date! 

But I'm more tempted by a 14060M than by a 5513 right now.

you seem to have thought about the question already and I would say there is no bad choice.

Plus, if you change your mind you can re-sell your Submariner quickly without losing money (welcome to the Rolex world !).

Concerning the vintage Submariner, don't forget it is a toolwatch that was used by the french and british navy: It shoud resist basic outdoor activities... 

I think the servicing question is a wrong problem: how do the people who collect vintage Longines, Movado, Universal, etc... do to have their watches serviced ?

Of course I understand that for someone who is used to modern watches, the vintage pieces are always scary at the beginning...

I admit the 5513 would be very nice. Obviously it is a (Dr) strong watch! 

Like my 94010 was.

Still I'm tempted by the easyness of doing with a 14060.

As you said there's no bad choice and it's never too late to sell and buy another.

What do you think of the 14060 and 14060M?

i says go for it i love these 2 watches for different reasons. whats good about the 14060M?

- great looks. simple and uncluttered. no Rolexrolexrolex on the rehaut for the older ones. No extra cosc text to clutter stuff up. no date and date bubble thingie...
- no issues of RSC servicing as superluminova dials wont have similar servicing issues faced by t-dial and hands

The 5513 is very glamorous but indeed the 14060M should do it better for me, as a tool watch.

Yesterday I saw my brother in law who has a 14060 with tritium dial. He got it serviced three years ago and he now has very nice white Luminova hands on his yellow tritium dial. He had not even noticed.

I would not want to live that.

The M calibre 3130 is a plus for me too.

...so, would you consider an M-series Explorer II?? I know it's got the cyclops (date loupe) on it, but it is minus the RolexRolexRolex and would come with the 3186 movement with a great GMT functionality.

I own a Z-series and it's been my daily basher for nigh on 8 months now. Takes a lickin' and goes on...

The Sea Dweller was a nice catalogue option but I like slim watches and I don't really need the date as I want a Sub to be a tool watch for some specific activities, not as an everyday watch.

Well, actually I would love to own the 6538-big crown but 5513 is the great piece to start my rolex vintage engine.

What I love on this 5513 are....it is the submariner sport model, 2 hands, no date and cyclop, tritium hands and markers.

I'm very happy with my 5513.
