When a friend who’s “somewhat” into watches asks to see your watch and then proceeds to wipe the piece with his shirt?

That’s exactly what happened to me a few days ago with my explorer. I know, I know, its a tool watch, should be enjoyed, not babied, no need to be precious about it, blah blah blah.. but still.. anyway, what does one do? Well, try to be stoic about it and say to oneself that it’s just a watch after all even if it irritated the hell out of my OCD 😁

Next time I’m with that guy, I’m gonna wear a Seiko 😅

I certainly would stop him if his shirt is made from steel wool or sand paper!
Hopefully, there is not such a shirt, so probably not much harm with saphire crystals these day.
Anyway, I would think about wiping the watch myself before handing it to him. (But since I don't carry cloths with me.....not always possible.)

But regardless, unless he’s wearing micro fiber, it’s going to be painful to watch 😁

I think for me it will be handing the watch only if I know the person to be an enthusiast.  If not, best to err on the side of caution and just leave it on the wrist and at an appropriate distance away. 😉

Explain somebody else how we treat watches would be eyebrow wipping.
We are from another planet with our passion.
Who for God sake collect so many watches?
Who spend a few houses on watches?
Why somebody else buy an expensive painting, just for decorating a wall?
All questions that belongs to the one that passioned.

When i was in an official Longines AD in my country when the store lady lay my Conquest on the stores desk made from wood.
Why did she, while the C F Bucherer watches where siting in a safe display?
Do she the same with C F Bucherer watches from customers?
Horrible, when that store delivers my Conquest scratched.
I think they must stop selling watches, and do only sell Casio G shocks.

Lucky my Conquest was inexpensive, but it’s such a fine watch, it is all worth to love it.

much worse than what a friend could do with his shirt (unless it had a zipper...). So what would I do? Raise an eyebrow at the most.

Funny thing is, as he was rubbing it against his shirt, i thought to myself, thank God that thing has a raised crystal so scratches to the bezel would be at a minimum. True enough, hardly a scratch. I got lucky for sure.

But can you imagine the minutiae that goes into our heads? Raised crystal? So nerdy hahaha!

I recently went to a Patek event with one of my Rare Handcrafts, and TWICE they had to bring it me back to me during the evening after I inadvertently left it somewhere! So I normally feel very relaxed about my own watches, I guess provided that I can unconsciously trust the environment....but standards of course vary, so next time please don't take your watch off in that guy's presence and you'll (likely) be safe!

Unless I knew they would show proper respect. However since the deed is done you could always calmly call out the behavior and compare it to something everyone can understand, like “I doubt it would be okay to use a shirt tail to wipe dust off the hood of someone’s luxury car without checking first.” If they don’t get the hint and apologize or they become defensive well…
