Assuming the salesman addressed you politely, what should have he replied to make you happy? "Oh yes Kev, I'm going to put you on the list as number 327, even if we both know you'll have ZERO chance of ever getting this watch! Congrats, now you are on a list!!"
Again, I sincerely hope you'll somehow get your root beer, but I also hope that good customers who want one can get it as well... Like all of us my friend, who normally have access to popular pieces after a significant buying history, you have no "right to buy a watch".
