for me 38-40 mm is also the sweet spot. In order of appreciation: 1) 116500 Daytona black or white is fine with me. Slight preference aesthetically for white. Also, unlike the black the white was not used on 116520. Prefer the ceramic to steel bezel.  2) Batman GMT. Love the color combination, the practical complication and the overall look. Also very scratch resistant compared to WG. 3) 114060 no date Submariner, because of its heritage, look (black glossy dial and black glossy bezel), no date to set, NO CYCLOPS! And I just plain like it as a fantastic go anywhere watch.

The problem for me with the various SD and Deepsea is the size...amongst other things.

1. Platinum day date 40 with black stick dial. The understated daddy for formal occasions, old age and to pass on to the next generation. Total Rolex classic, up there with a Porsche 911 and Coca Cola bottle (etc) and defining icons of the ages.

2. Sky Dweller steel/WG with blue dial. Rolex goes complicated and undercuts everyone in pricing with zero quality give up.

3. GMT Batman. Need a tool watch that you can put on your wrist and never take off no matter what activity is being performed.

Why?

- three different bezels (smooth, fluted and ceramic rotating)
- the trio covers all occasions in my view
- all very different to each other (I’m a sucker for GMT complication)
- obviously dials could be white on SD and ice blue or silver/rhodium on DD40 to get 3 different colour dials

Would be perfect if the Sky Dweller had a jubilee bracelet then you would have 3 different bracelets... I’m hoping for jubilee availability on Sky Dweller...I know I have skipped a Daytona- that would be the 4th...

If you’re going for the classic iconic Rolex in No. 1, I’d recommend downsizing to 36 mm. 40 mm is less Carrera than Panomera. Also, if your “next generation” is girls (like mine), more likely to get an heir to actually wear the thing. 🙂

....i was just looking at the modern offerings and giving my personal taste. I will do a vintage version of this thread and that will play more to the classic theme.

.....when one does a Top 3 from the current offerings, the universe is defined within a relatively narrow range. But when one opens it up to all vintage, then not only is it much more unlimited, but also price becomes a big factor. My three moderns could be bought for under £50k. Buying top three vintage for under £50k becomes a virtually impossible task......so i am thinking about how to structure the post. Top three for under £150k maybe a way.

The Plat cosmo...... i can't get my head around it really. I think a part of that is just old school British. Never mix brown and blue....golden rule for an old school Brit. Miles let me borrow his for a little bit.....the heft is quite something. But its not one I would go for. Imran and Miles would tell you I am missing something not to like it

Personally I would go for a blue dial Mileguss. 

....The SD is simply too big. On the Subs, it was hard to exclude one from my choice. I think I am dominated too much by the charm of the vintage Subs and SDs....

14060m were watches for every day. I consider them the best in comparison with 114060. Then appeared in the set 116710BLNR, and they became hours for travel. Well, under the blue suit, blue shirts, jeans ...) Daytona 116500Black - watch your soul. I like their elegance.
