Rolex 16550 Explorer II Black Dial. A rare bird?
What I think. I am hunting a nice one for a good decade, and almost nothing.
If it wouldn't have been spider, it would be perfect.
To be precise, the configuration I am looking for is: Rail Dial, no Spider.
While I see several cream rail dials, when it comes to the 16550, the black rail is like a ghost.

Strangely, I only see Spiders with black dials. I never saw ( or I don't remember ) a spider cream dial.
And it has been a very long time I didn't see a no spider black rail dial.

... and regarding the photograph you show, what I really love there is the intense patina of indexes in contrast with the black dial which makes for an awesome look.
As you know, I have been in the hunt for a creamy white dial 16550 for some time, a variant which I never had seen in person here in my hunting grounds. You also know that unexpectedly a couple of months ago a friendly dealer here which I had consulted about the creamy dial, offered me a black dial 16550 from 1987 (not rail not spyder either).
Though It was not in my plans to own a black dial 16550, it was seeing it and falling in love, so I inmediately made a deal and took it home. The dial is in perfect condition though the indexes show only a very very slight patina, very far to the spectacular patina shown on your picture above.
I´m very happy with the discovery of this model which I never had paid due attention before. I only wish I will find my creamy cousin some day soon to make company with this one!
I have already shown my black dial 16550 before, but I´m showing again some pictures below.

Not a silly idea at all my friend! Specially among greedy guys like we are! Lol!
Yes, the 16550 is a very interesting collecting option which deserves more attention from collectors.
And I feel that as prices of other more sought references (Submariner, GMT, Daytona) is escallating as shown in recent auctions, these references will be getting the deserved attention in a very near future.
Better to hurry now!!

Yes, that is quite frightening. An absolute priority for me would be to find a 1019.
But a black dialed 16550 would make my day.
As well as a black dialed 16520.
And a 16760.
And a 16750.

... I´m really very happy with this catch. It took a lot of work (and pesetas!) to get it! But well worth it!
It finally arrived on last Monday, but I could only drive to downtown today to take delivery. I have returned a few minutes to the office with this beauty on my wrist!

I did not know the 16550 or 16570 were offered on a Jubilee?
I know the fitment is the same as for the corresponding 16760 / 16710, but my understanding is that the Explorer 2 line always came fitted with an Oyster bracelet?
