First Panerai
Buon giorno Paneristi,
this is my first thread ever (i´m old school), so please excuse some things! I´m infected by the italian virus!
Looking for my first (no, to be honest my second) Pam and it´s kind of hard for me. Should have SD, 1950 44mm case, small second, GMT and date could be o.k.! I Plus: I love the 9 or/and the 3 on the dial ("classic" Panerai). Let´s say I´m looking for a Panerai in the "classical style". Price around 7.500 €, nearly 10.000 USD.
First I fell in love with the 233 (dot-version), but a friend of mine told me not to buy this one (to much "action" on the dial). I really, really love the doomed crystal, which he doesn´t. What do you guys out there think about the 233?
Are there other models with doomed crystal in 44mm 1950´íes? Alternative to this a 47mm model could be possible although, same question as above? Does a 47 mm model look to big on a 6,5-7,5´´wrist?
Other question: What do you think of the new 510? I can get one of the first watches in August 2013 for a good price. Had the 111 for one week (first Panerai), the my brother bought it off my wrist. The Luminor case was o.k., but I want to wear my new watch in the office as well during leisure time, so I thing a 1950 case is "smoother". Do you think, the 510 will be a good "investment"?

You're probably better off getting a 1950 Luminor case
so I wouldn't get the PAM510 since you say the PAM111 was just "ok". The PAM510 won't be a piece that will skyrocket up in value, but it should hold its own relatively well IMO.
Besides the PAM233, have you considered the PAM312?

Besides that, Pam312 looks really beautiful, the dial is very tidy. The question is to take the PAM 320 instead, because the price difference is not so big, you have a GMT-function which you can, if you want, hide behind the hour hand (I think), right? The only difference would then would be the writings on the dial. The other question is, to take the version with steel bracelet (PAM328 or 329), so one would have a steel bracelet (thought real Paneristi wear straps, as I learned) right at the beginning. I suppose you can put normal aftermarket straps on it, is that correct?
Am I Right, that the 233 is not on of your favorites?

Yes correct, the PAM312 doesn't have the domed crystal like that on the PAM233
If you buy a steel bracelet Panerai, you can always take the bracelet off and put on a leather strap. You can do that with all bracelet Panerai's, so you're not limited only to wearing the metal bracelet.
Yes the PAM233 isn't my favorite, but it is a great 1st Panerai (well technically your 2nd), and some here have the PAM233 as their 1st PAM.

Went today to Panerai Boutique in the Big City and tried some models, 233 too. Very nice watch, fantastic to wear, the perfect "dress watch". But the winner is: PAM422! I think she´s got everything a (real) Panerai needs. After the choice of 47 mm (which looks really fantastic on my 7,5`` wrist) Fiddy would be my absolute favorite (9+3+small sec.;-)), but it´not my cup of tea; YET!!!

So, you don't want a Panerai....
you want a watch that has...everything...you need and that is "branded" Panerai. Why don't you throw in an automatic movement, for good measure, and buy a 320, 321, 351? They are 44mm, 1950 case, and they have..acceptable...Panerai dial. GMT, dates (the 321 also has the PR). Top of the crop, the 351 has also a very nice "tobacco" dial, golden hand and a titanium case, which is not as heavy as the SS ones. The cost of all the 3 models is well withing your budget (and then some)
The 233 it's a handsome model but, when you'll have a look at the models I've just suggested, you'll figure out what a "busy" dial is...

Your suggestions are good, but I don´t want titanium (until yet, never seen or tried before) and PR as it is in these models (I like the linear PR).
Tomorrow I´ll will go to the next big city (Munich) an try some models, 351 too.
Compared to 233 I don´t think that your proposals have busy dials (exept 321 maybe).
Concerning Automatik I´m not sure, because "real Paneristi" say, a true Panerai is only one with hand wound caliber; what do you think?
Would PAM233 be a choise for you?

anyway, so what's the big deal with an automatic movement? If you want to buy a P A N E R A I, you buy a 232, 249, 372, 000 etc not a 'watch' with a date (anatema) and a GMT. I had a 233 and after a couple of weeks, I couldn't wait to give it away. When I finally did, I was happier than I had been, on the day of my...divorce

Why the 422 not for the first one? After trying the 1950 cases, I´m not sure anymore, if PAM510 would be a great choice, as I know, how a PAM111 is to wear. 8 day´s man!

Yeah l agree my logic may not be so sound...
I guess when I tried on the 422, perhaps with the proportions, the lugs, etc... It didn't seem "too" big on the wrist. When i tried on the 449 for what ever reason it seemed bigger on the wrist. Size is often a relative impression and or mindset and since I didn't try the two watches in the same time... I may have been feeling "big wristied" when I tried on the422
