I know the 360 is a "special" edition but is it really that special?
I noticed the price has multiplied in the 2nd hand market like 4 times the retail price.
Thoughts?

Sorry for the evidence, but the god price is the price people is willing to pay.
If nobody is willing to pay such a price, you will see the difference.
Special, it is in a negative way.
At the beginning, it was a watch destined to the Community of Paneristis.
It became a flippers watch.
A flipped watch.
Suddenly, it is less interesting, to me.

Is a Panerai 36 an special watch ? No it is not !
Panerai collectors will say it's special but let's be fair .... after all it's just another 44 mm luminor. In titanium with brown dial and some extra text on the dial.
Same can be said about so many Panerai watches.
So that PAM360 is kind of the same. nice and hard to get. Is it worth 4 times it's listprice ? Don't know, is the 36 worth this insane price ?
Is it worth all the money it can be sold for? As I wrote earlier: whatever floats your boat...isn't that 'marina miliare' on the dial just BS ?
It doesn't make the watch more pretty, does it ?
And than the fact of being the first titanium ... so what ?
If this makes the price, the 339 should be 5 times listprice ;-)
The first composite and probably the last composite, also the 'Marina Militare' on the dial and the 8 giorni logo
I never understood why people want to pay more for some stupid words on a dial. No matter if it's a Marina Militare or a Tiffany Rolex or Patek

It was part of the Projetto Slytech, was Panerai first attempt into Titanium case ( along with the 40, which seems to be the first, though ), had a superb brown dial an tritium indexes, and was made with the autorization from the Mamma Mia.
When it was released, it was not 5 times to retail not even two times the retail... It took several years for people to understand its interest, and its value.
It was not artificial, nor trendy, it was genuine, and honest, dedicated to true people, not people who want to make immediate money with it ( even if ALL the Pam 360 owners are not in this case, of course. )
Naah, you can't compare the 360 and the 36.
Even if the comparative values, nowadays are very close.
To answer to your queston, I would ALWAYS favor the 36 over the 360, for all the reasons I mentionned above.
Best!

and the 360 was a hype a year before the first was delivered
But imo this is because Panerai was not famous when they made the 36.
If they would make something like a 36 today and also very limited, it would also fetch 4 times listprice in no time.
For me they are similar because IMO you have to be nuts to pay 20K for any of these 2 pices. For 20 K you can get a PP5711 ... or a journe CS.
As much as I like Panerai, 20 K is imo way too much for such a piece
But thats's just me. Sorry to say but I don't understand why people wat to pay top dollars for a Pré vedome ... and you don't want to hear what I think about
100K for an ugly 2 hands 1940 Panerai
Back in 1995 when these real vintages pieces could be found for 5 or 7 K I could understand why people bought it ... but 100 K for the same watch 17 years later .... HELL NO
And you know that they are ( the authentic, not the re assembled, fake, and so on ) vey rare.
This is a very subjective topic: Do you really think the Patek 5070, on the second market) with its Lemania movement, is worth twice the value of a Duometre or a Datograph?
Me not.
So you see, all this is very subjective, and depends on everyone's taste, belief, conviction and interest.
Best,
Nicolas
The Dato was always easy to get with a good discount and that's why the secondhand value was or is not that great.
If AP or Panerai would make limited editions in series of 10.000 pieces instead of a few hundred to max 2 K they would also drop in value
the 5070 was made in pretty small numbers, much less than what Patek could sell.
Why does a PAM 111 go 35% under list and a LE like a 339 / 382 / ... doesn't ... same reason as the Patek 5070 vs Lange dato. --> being 'more than enough pieces and not enough pieces to supply the market
The Dato is made in too many pieces
But this can't be compared with a Vintage Panerai that rose 1000 or 2000 % in 15 years, that is insane
5 % per year like your exaple the 5070 is imo very acceptable and still 'safe'
If a vintage Panerai would go from 6000 in 1995 to 14000 in 2012 I wouldn't call it crazy .... but 100 K ??????

and you have the 36 ?
I should have taken another example
Well, the history is interesting to me but I have problems with the hyper inflated prices often forced by it's 'history'
Not only Panerai, a Rolex Comex or PN for 50 to 100 K ???
To me a Comex is just a submariner with an extra stamp on the dial. I know some people will hate my
but believe me other will agree with me.

To start it off, the background to this is that I know 2 local folks in Sg have recently acquired the 360 at what I thought to be insane price (as many of you might deem so).
And they did not bat an eyelid on this (maybe they are millionaires or whatsnot). It really made me wonder what the was going inside their minds before they pulled the trigger.
I could not find myself doing it for there are other grails to be had (albeit one man's meat is another's poison) and this is largely due to the effects of "irrational exuberance"?
I am not a die hard fan but I do like Panerai for they had changed the landscape of BIG watches today.
I hope this has not detered many to view the brand as a marketing gimmick genius.
My humble 2 cents.

that mad prices will always stand as long as there's a fool who is ready to pay for it !!
no matter what his reasons are.
The rest is pure personal taste or like and dislike and that's good, we wouldn't want all to be wearing the same piece on our wrist huh !!
and as Mr Greenspan puts it "irrational exuberence"?

Shit! Literally. One can of Artist's shit (1961) by piero Manzoni was sold for Euro 124,000 at Sotheby's on May 23rd. 2007. Another tin was sold in Oct. 2008 for 97,250 pounds stirling! There's no accounting for taste - yuck!!

Dang....and I thought we were insane just buying watches at crazy prices...
