without more clues. What's your favourite colour? How much money do you have? How much money do you want (or can) spend, chasing after watches? Do you buy for your...own....gratification or to...show off? The Bomba, only gives away the answer to the last question, since anybody that wants to "show off" a Panerai would never buy that horrible contraption...

I don't like La Bomba (I can stomach the automatic movement but the "cyclop"? Yuck!). Matter of fact I don't like any Submersible. I'm a 3646/232/A9 type of chap. Also I'm a serious diver that uses a dive...computer...not Seiko/Citizens/Panerai Submersible's kind of watches...
Now that I have a bit more info, with 20K in the "piggy bank" the Pre-V and Vintage stuff it's way out of your financial capabilities, leaving you with a choice of a modern classic. A large number of LEs would be within your reach. The 372 (not an LE) is going to be an absolute crowd puller and with an enormous Panerai's DNA, how to pass up? A 127 could be a very nice choice too. For some reason, I can't see the...jump....La Bomba/232/190 as a possible one. The 232 would feel way too "dainty" after a brute like PAM 64...
Should you decide I'm way wrong in my assumption, a 232/190 type model, wouldn't be a bad choice. Last, I would have a "look" at some T-dials (A1-preA/ A4/A9) etc. A T-dial has a fascination on it's own and once you've got one on the wrist, you're hooked, ask anyone. There could be a couple of destros to be considered 22A/22B or a 26A/26B.
There, my 2cents. For....serious....carateristics/quality/movement/rarity considerations, all of the other partecipants to this forum are way....WAY more qualified to "guide" you than I am....

as this watch is normally off the radar screen for people thinking of their 1st Panerai. Personally I love the watch. It's the only panerai that I sold and subsequently bought back! Although there're elements that I don't prefer, such as the cyclop, it's still a very wicked piece and I luv mine!
Now onto your next: do you really want to blow $20k all onto one watch? How'bout a 249 then a 372? From strictly asthetic's perspective, you will have two of the best dial representations from Panerai which really defines the DNA of the brand.
The other alternatives is to dig a little deeper. As you already mentioned, a 322, IMHO, is the perfect example of historical lineage w/ fantastic movement finishing.
As others mentioned, there are really no boundaries but I would be VERY careful in terms of venturing into pre-vendome/vintages. Given the potential amount involved, it might not be a bad idea to see if your new-found infectuation is here to say or not. Good luck!
I thought of the 322 (and I know you love it, I still remember the rugged strap you had on it a while back) but 20K just doesn't do it. He'll have to dig...deeper indeed..

Well, if one can settle for the black dial, I think the 309 is a bargain, at least on a relative scale.
the ruggedized Ozzie style croc...
Cheers - Sergio
not how....you...imagine it should be. The chaps that blew up real ships, in a real war, were wearing 3646s not super-mucho-macho-looking-I wanna destroy the world-type of contraptions, with more bells&whistles than a Breiteling. So, if you want a Panerai and want R U G G E D, none come more (really) rugged than a 3646 or 249 that where of the wrists them crazy Italian X-Mas' Frogmen....
IMHO to be sure....

Very cool while at the same time very different than what you have. Historic instead of contemporary, Radiomir instead of Luminor, hand-wound instead of automatic, titanium instead of steel, in-house movement instead of contracted, brown dial instead of black, solid hands instead of skeleton, and on and on.
It would be my vote to give you a really complimentary watch to what you own, instead of one that competes.

It is a really nice watch but not all can live with a destro
