Hi to all, I have recently posted a message on Out of Range Panerai watch, and thanks to all those who voiced their honest opinion. All agreed that OOR represent no added value to the existing range, and even unfair to those who got the original series. To me, OOR model is normally refer to model already out of production and no longer available, and that Panerai might have a few left-overs during that limited production run, so they stamped OOR on the back and sell them off, and correct me if I am wrong in assuming this.

What if someone wanted a particular model and it has been out of production since and no longer available anywhere except through secondhand dealer or auction. He then come across an OOR watch from the series he was after, should he go ahead and buys it or stay away saying it has no real meaning or significance in collecting such a piece? It is still a Panerai, it just doesn't carry any limited edition numbers or series numbering.

The main reason why I am so intrigued in this "OOR" topic is that I have been offered not one but a few brand new OOR Panerai by Panerai Boutique. Usually models that are no longer in production, and OOR in very very low quantity. It's damn difficult to say no thanks since the original series/production has long gone, and for me, may be a chance to own one from that era, but being an OOR. To buy or not to buy, that's the question.

buy it if you love it...OOR or not...

in that case you'd pay the normal 'last' listprice of that certain type i guess .... si if you like the model why not buy it,  but buying it 'because' it is an OOR I  wouldn't do.

Maybe you can enlighten us which ref. nr. you are talking about ?

there is NO stigma, in buying an OOR watch. If you like the models and can afford them, by all means, buy them all. The only caveat, IMO, about the OOR models is about the price. Most dealers would try to peddle the OORs at a higher price because of the "rarity" of being an OOR.... In that case it's subjective whether you want to spend the additional money the dealer might ask or whether you attribute no extra value to an OOR model..

I believe there are 2 sides to the OOR saga, the one that most enthusiasts get upset about are the OORs that appear after a limited edition of say 500 is made or produced. You will then get an additional say 10 OORs thrown into the mix of the original limited edition of 500, therefore the limited edition has been diluted somewhat or as some other may view as a limited edition of a limited edition!

Then there is the case of an OOR that is produced despite the fact that the range is still in production, such as the OOR Pam 24. I don't know what to say about these OORs except that they are usually frowned upon by certain quarters.

Then there is the other OOR  which are the ones made by Panerai after a certain series is discontinued. For example I have an OOR Pam 170 which was bought last year at a boutique. It remains a cherished watch as it is an example of a watch made available after it was stopped in very limited numbers. I guess Panerai has some additional parts/cases and it makes no business sense to keep them if they can sell them.

Ultimately it is up to each individual to decide how to view this and I trust you would buy the watch if you like it, the fact that is is an OOR is just a bonus.
