(I personally prefer the PAM 40) but I would put it in the group of "neo-vintage" pieces such as pre-A, A series etc. These are all still modern pieces and quite different to vintage or even pre-V watches.
No wrong decision here,

with all respect but a watch that is 'worth' 18K listprice and that is sold on the grey market at 4 - 5 times that price ??? is way out of the line for me .... you pay a lot for the hype IMO in this case, initially it's a basic 3 hands watch with an Angelus movement but be honnest it's not haute horlogery you pay for .... but it's being part of something
vintage is an other story ... they are harder to find (at least those who are still in the original state) and there's the history that lies behind, my problem with vintage is that you need an expert to determine if the watch you want or get offered is not a sort of fabriciaton of different parts of different watches put together at high price to make you believe you own something special ...
if you spent let's say 100K on a Patek you payed at least for something like a great brand with an horlogical history and a complication that few can repeat or do better . The chance your Patek is going to be worth half the price is rather unthinkable, the problem with Panerai is that today you buy something that is worth only what others want to give fo it , but you pay a lot for in fact a most simple watch not comparable with a complicated Patek IMO.
but like i always say, buy what your heart tells you, just keep some things in your rear mind
