Panerais are definitely my new love - at this juncture, I am not sure what my favorite brand is: it's a tie between Panerai and PP...
As you can see, there are 3 vacancies in this box:

This is what I currently have: PAM 180, 192, 203, 224, 228, 229 and 277.
Any suggestions on what I should add? I am thinking 249, 276 (another big step) and 292...
BTW, here is a closer shot of the Three Musketeers - the Firenze LEs:

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Thanks Nicolas.
I will research on and pursue you excellent advice!

flashy stuff (along the lines of your advice on the Quai de Lille), but does that mean all the newer models (of this particular brand) are not worth considering at all?
Best,
Sam

I think that appreciating vintage and pre-V Panerai watches is a process that takes time and should not be rushed into, otherwise it will be that you are going there from the wrong reasons. Studying the history and becoming passionate about it, is IMO a must before choosing that route. There are many modern Panerai watches that will be great (you are missing the Radiomir line) and you may want to consider some neo-vintage, some of which Nico recommended (pre-A, A, B transitionals). If these will sing to you, perhaps you will find your way to Pre-V and eventually vintage.
Only my humble opinion,
Asi
Great the 203, you broke my poor Paneristi heart with this formidable watch.
you need some rads!

Really appreciate the expert views all around. I think it's natural that we have some diversity. Every person has a different reason for collecting a certain piece. So far my criteria are:
- Whether the looks sing to me
- Rarity
- Movement
- And to a lesser extent, whether the piece can hold its value
Now I appreciate what is lacking is the history and the story behind the brand. I am glad that my post has generated some interesting discussion. I will see if I can balance the various themes in the future.
Sam
And congrats on the new acquisition of the Firenze set.
I think it's fair to deduce from your criteria above that you're drawn to the looks of the Luminor. Having said that, it would still be nice to balance out the collection with a Radiomir?
You've also mentioned your appreciation of movements. While this may not be the norm for the typical Panerai collectors, I do think you will continue to see many interesting offerings from Panerai. As a matter of fact, that led me to many great finds over the years. In any case, good luck to your ongoing quest for a greater collection.
And I will do some digging on the pre-Vendomes.
BTW, it was nice to bump into you at Christie's the other day. Did you get the "Tribute to Enzo Ferrari"? It fetched a rather remarkable price... I went for the HW Zalium Ocean Diver but was narrowly outbid
Sam
I am confident of getting the Cali in 2 weeks' time...good thing that prices have come down lately..
I know I can always learn something new from your posts

I do not see anything wrong with collecting current/recent model PAMs and, equally important, I do not believe everyone (eventually) will, should or must seek out Pre-As, Pre-Vs or vintage pieces in order to be a true Paneristi and/or have a worthy or legitimate Panerai collection. I purchased my first PAM approximately four years ago. Today, I am no more interested in older PAMs than I was back then. I appreciate the older models . . . love to look at them. However, I have no interest in owning them. Rather, I personally prefer the more recent PAMs.
Therefore, to the gentleman who started this thread, my advice is simple . . . do your homework, research all of the different models, and buy what YOU like, not what others tell you you should, or will eventually, like. If you gravitate towards the Pre-As, Pre-Vs or vintage pieces, go that route . . . they are beautiful. However, if you prefer the more recent models, as your current collection suggests, there are plenty of great current/recent models to choose from. As others have observed, your current collection is light on Rads. A 249 would be a great addition. Perhaps a 292 or a 322 as well. You also do not have any PVDs or ceramics. Consider a 26, 292 or the upcoming 317. You also do not have any in-house movements. Plenty of options there as well.
You have to wear these watches. Therefore, buy what sings to you and makes you smile, regardless of what makes others smile.
Thats my 2 cents.

Hhehe LOL!
I'd keep what you have and feel the same way as Craig. It's nice to have one of the early pieces but I wouldn't go so far as to sell most of your collection to get them. Some hardcore Panerai fans are "stuck in the past" (let me stress that there is nothing wrong with this so don't yank my arm for saying this
) where they only want to collect vintage, pre-A's, and Tritium dial Panerai's from A and B series because they don't like, in general, the new models that have come out. Everyone is different and has different tastes, and I personally stay away from the older models since prices have risen pretty high, so your money might be better spent on new(er) models IMO.
And for suggestions on what to get, I would fill the remaining 3 spots with at least 1 Radiomir - maybe a 232, 249, 246, 292, 322 (Tourbillon), or 274 (Platinum 10 day GMT).
Cheers,
Anthony
Just want to say that add something you actually love, more luminors probably
My point of view is I don't see any PVD Panerai or Radiomir in your collection. You might love to add them in.
Just my .02
Cheers
