Hi chaps,
On owning a Rolex 8 years now, i over heard some work people talking about Panerais. Not ever having heard of Panerai it raised my interest so i started looking into it. I soon realised that these watches are just so hard to get hold of, it has grown my desire to own one even more.
One thing that that really appeals to me about the Pams are that the average street guy wouldn't have a clue as to what they are. Because of its simple design, it can be passed as a normal watch to the passerby.
On making a decision to buy a Pam, the focus was on which one i should buy. Seeing that i have a DateJust, i needed a Pam that at least had the date on the face. So a majority of base models were not an option. So I started looking at Luminor Power Reserve PAM241. On reading some reviews and talking to some people, they advised that i opt for the 44mm version despite my thin wrist, so i focused on the PAM90. I gave myself some time to convince myself that this is a reasonable price to pay.
I then started calling dealers to ask if there were any available, but found it harder and harder to find. One dealer suggested that i pop in and have a look at similar models, so i did. This is where the problem arose, the assistant brought the Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT (PAM233). I put it on, and that was it, i was hooked.
The question i have to struggle with is, do i shell out twice the amount i originally thought about paying for a Panerai?
If i venture into a higher end watch like the GMT, then its natural for my mind to wander into what else i can purchase for the same value.
Can any of you offer some advice?
Happy to see a new face, here!
As for your question, Shall I or not???
It seems that you already have the answer, as the most important is not the others opinions, but yours...
What do you think?
Are you really in love with this 233?
Does the watch speak really loud to you?
If yes, you should jump on it...
If not, here I am, me and my opininon...LOL
Well, I don't like the Horizontal power reserve, I don't like it at all, as it looks like a pumpkin...
I don't like the busy dials of the modern panerai, and I just give you an advice...Be very careful, you may get tired of it very quickly, as some of my friends who got it, re sold it 2, 3 or 6 months later...
Panerai watches are very nice, very strong, very apppealing and sexy, but I'd say the simpler one, the more sober of them...Not with a dial with a Power Reserve indicator, a date and a GMT...
I owned till 30 pannies, and the most complicated was and still is a Chrono Mare Nostrum....
But, once again, the most important is : Does this watch speaks a lot to you?
Best, my friend.
Nicolas
Since this is going to be your 1st PAM and you are looking for with date, you may want to consider the GMT PAM88 in 44mm.
Only thing is some people are not used to the `vibration` of the automatic movement at times but it is normal and you may miss that rubble at times when you are wearing it.. Lol..
The 233 having a in house movement with 8 Days power reserve is awesome but since you are unsure and may not want to spend that much, the PAM88 should be a good alternative.
Happy watch hunting !!!
Cheers,
It's always best to get the watch that you first fell in love with
Otherwise, if you want to get a GMT like the PAM233 but don't want to spend as much, I would suggest the PAM88 as colantotte suggested (pic of PAM88 below).
Cheers,
Anthony
