People always wonder about matching and non matching.  One would think non matchings was bad.

In this case non matching is as good as it gets.

The story was that the original dials had an issue with discoloration which was fixed later.  making the disclored one more rare.

A real beauty to behold.

was caused by a reaction between the varnish and the luminous material. The discoloration was happening quite quickly but by the time Panerai discovered it some pieces (201/As and 202/As) have already been sent. The varnish was replaced and production continued. Nobody in pre-V Panerai could confirm how many non matching dials are out there but there are certainly much less than the matching ones. I think that beyond the rarity and anecdotal significance, these non-matching examples just look wonderful!

that's the winner. I talked to a panerai ad today and he basically that i have no shot of finding one through an ad.  he also said there are an extraordinary amount of fakes to be extremely careful.  Not what i wanted to here!! Any suggestions

You need to be a little patient. 

I really recommend that you try and go through an AD. You need to get a list of AD's across the States and make some calls.  If any one of them has one great.  If you have no luck there your next best choice is to place an order i.e. get on the AD's waiting list for the watch and just be patient.  In the mean time continue the AD call ritual every couple weeks. There are big chain type Ads that have multiple stores and they are well stocked and can take orders.  Beyond the wait list and the calling you have the second wrist option.  This is where you have to exercise serious caution.  The rule is simple buy the seller not the watch; don't try and  figure out or second guess the authenticity of the watch work on the authenticity of the seller the rest will fall into place.

Put a WTB "Want to Buy listing"  in the collectors market here on the site.

I am sure you will get some PM.  Just remember buy the seller.
