As an Italian-American, it is utterly disappointing.
To not even qualify for the WC... pathetic. NO excuses for that.
I will say, I felt some pride when the idea of them replacing Iran in the Cup was recently floated, and they immediately responded they would not do that. It would have been utterly wrong. And I hope the Iranian Team does come here and play. They earned it, and deserve to be here, regardless of the political climate.
As for who will win? I am really not up to speed on the prospects of the countries. I always like Argentina in tournaments. I hope the US can get out of their bracket. But the event is so spectacular, I am glad I work from home as the games will be on nonstop!
+1 on hopes the US makes a good showing.
Other than the Americans I cheer for the Dutch. Spain, France and Argentina are the favorites.
Well Italy has the toughest path to qualifying, at least that’s the explanation many are stating…
Certainly puts a little damper on the festivities and passion in Toronto with its over 500k people of Italian heritage. USA might do okay, Canada is always hoping for a breakthrough but I enjoy England, some European teams and the excitement of South American teams. The whole tournament 🏟️ is top notch sports.
France 🇫🇷 last on your list Nico 😳 which is a fine list in any case except for me France wouldn’t enter my top four 🙂
I’d like to feel excited, but...
... I’m not exactly thrilled about this World Cup, which is already tainted by corruption (even more so than previous ones…), the outrageous inflation in ticket prices for a sport that claims to be for the people, and the poor reception given to supporters of teams frowned upon (just taling about the US here, not Canada or Mexico). And I’m not even mentioning the ‘refreshment breaks’, which are really just a ploy to show twice as many adverts during the games.
Having said that, as a Paris Saint-Germain fan, it would be refreshing to see a new winner, such as Portugal (Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Vitinha and Gonçalo Ramos playing for PSG).
Italy's absence hurts. But the tournament spirit lives on.
It's tough to see Italy sitting this one out. No excuses for missing qualification they earned that absence. But I respect their decision not to take Iran's spot. That was the right call.
I'll be watching for the US, hoping they can surprise a few teams. France and Argentina look strong on paper, but tournaments have a way of humbling favorites. The beauty of the World Cup is that magic can come from anywhere.
