Omega

I had a chance to meet a gentleman who used to work for the Omega Museum in Bienne last week. He has retired for some time now but obviously his knowledge of the brand and its fine timepieces remain as vibrant as can be. The long discussion with him and the thread started by Zac the other day have inspired me to bring these literary and promotional items out from various storage for a couple of good group shots.





Most of them were acquired between 1999 and 2005. Then I started collecting again in maybe 2009. I don't have too many Omega watches as you know they are not cheap. But quite fortunately, these are free giveaways except for the Journey Through Time which I paid for and two other third party books on Omega. The Omega Saga and the book on Sir Peter Blake were gifted to me.

They may not be worth much even when combined. But they provide a bond of sorts to this favorite brand of mine.

It's great to see that you appreciate these little things that I have. Trust me it is no different from collecting stamps and coins. Nothing of significant value. Some of them have great stories to back while some were just giveaways with nothing to talk about.

One of the most generous people I know.

...and set them aside to be auctioned on a local watch web site in a few days. We are having a major flood in the southern part of the country and those who are not in the position to make a monetary donation can donate watch-related items to raise some fund instead. So a little good karma for me too I hope.

i may have lost most of my display stuff, but i do still have my genuine Polo shirt that Swatch UK sent me along with the display stuff. there are so many fake polo shirts on ebay that its good to own a real one.

in retrospect, i probably would have got rid of all the display stuff now as i'm thinning everything down for my house move and i wouldnt want to have just thrown it away.

i may well start collecting some of the memorabilia once things are settled.

an impressive collection...

I want to do the same but the wife would complain about where I can store all this swag...

I think there must be something wrong with the ladies. My mom complains I have a load of stuff still at her house. And my fiancee says I have too many of these around in my own house.

But all of those book items can fit in one bookshelf stack about three feet wide. And the merchandises in the second pic fit in a box the size of a small refrigerator. Not too much of a trouble really. The troubling part for me is how to keep the termites away because these are great food for them.

You must be a really nice guy for people to give you so much stuff ;-) But seriously that is a fantastic collection and puts me to shame.  I particularly like the brown Omega (leather?) bag on the left of pic two.  Also what is the story behind the silver aluminium Speedmaster case/box?  I've not seen that one before.  I'll have to look for sir Peter Blake's book around the second hand book stores.  It looks interesting. 

I totally agree that these small trinkets can extend the enjoyment of owning a watch by a great brand like Omega.

It all started with just a few brochures and maybe the Moonwatch book given to me by Kieron Gray and Time Capsule from Hans Zbinden whom I met on another site. (If anyone has current e-mail address, I will be greatly appreciated.)

Anyway you should never be ashamed of anything because there are always people who have loads more than I do. I will show you pics soon of a friend's "personal" Omega Museum. That guy is crazy and I wonder if he will adopt me because he doesn't have a child.

As for the stuff I have, some I got simply because I was there and every guest got one. Some were from the nice gesture of local Omega boutique/office on special occasions or to stop me from whining about a repair service that went wrong. And, yes, some were downright products of extortion but I will never admit that if you try to have me prosecuted.

...in Japanese. The copy that I have is the English translation. One can be quickly indoctrinated in the cult of Moonwatch with just this one book!

...but may not be available anymore, Ruckdee.  I like my 2 coffee table books where i can drool over the nice pictures in there... u may want to give it a try. One called Cult Watches by Michael Balfour and the other is The Watch by Gene Stone.  My own watch references, I used to read a lot when i started to get interested in wristwatches in 2003, a lot of magazines, IW, QP, Watchtime, Revolution, Watch Journal, Peak Timepieces, Watch Critics, WOW, Chinese wristwatch magazines with nice pictures (I cant read Chinese) like Watcher, IW (chinese editions), loads more. Nowadays i just flip through the pages to enjoy watch pics.  I think i have about 300 of them in my study.  I think my next watch purchase i will accompany it with a nice book on its history.

I think I've seen that "Cult Watches" you suggest at a local bookstore. Will give it a good look and may even buy one on my next visit. Thank you for the suggestion.

The James Bond Seamaster is 12 years old now. And the Ploprof almost two. Sadly I no longer have the Panerai and the IWC with me due to financial constraint (read: liquidated for the engagement ring).

...the pictures, and you are right, collecting watches is not all there is to this.

Except for when you are really well off and have plenty of time, you can not have all watches. So also collecting the freebies and the books is really enjoyful.

I can only say shamefully that I have maybe 30% of what you can bring forward.

Cocker Spaniels don't look this good in my country usually because of the tropical weather. Futte looks super nice and clean. Thank you for sharing the moment. And the best of health to everyone including the baby.
