The caliber 343 (if I am not misinformed) existed both as Chronometre and non-chronometre.

As for the crown, yes it is replaced.

Please post some better photos of your dial and inside of the case back + movement.
Maybe we can find some more info on your watch...

Here is a scan from a 1958 Swedish Omega catalog showing a similar watch as yours without the Chronometre...

Hope this helps.

Many thanks to both the responses so far. Will post some more pictures tomorrow. Interesting that the advertisement you have is from Sweden as I am based in Norway so not very far away.

Slightly disapponting

Unfortunately you initial reaction that this is not a 343 calibre is correct. It is a 342. That explains the situation. It was sold as a 343, but I am still pleased as I got it for reasonable price. Is now at the watchmakers for a full overhaul. Thanks for the feedback and comments.

The 343 and 342 are from the same family....

A cal 343 chronometer would normally command a stiff premium . . .

. . . so as long as you're satisfied with the price paid, then all's well.  The ubiquitous 'clover leaf' pattern crown would be the correct replacement choice; they're still available from the usual parts suppliers.

Congratulations, and welcome to our Omega forum.  There are a few references I'm still chasing, and Seamaster chronometers are at the top of the list; a cal 343 would be my first choice, over even a 352.  A black dial would be irresistible!

Cordially,

Would certainly agree about the black dial. Thanks again for the feedback. Will post some new pictures of the 342 once its proper crown in place.

Here is the watch after a trip to the repairers. Running really well and with a proper crown in place.

Ah, that's even better! A correct crown . . .

. . . adds  much to the appeal.  A few of mine, including the Tiffany chronometer, have replacements that don't reflect the originally issued designs.
