Excellent post Wayne! Everyone should review it.

Great information in there and a wonderful summary of the Royal Oak.

I have shared some of my feelings on the newest 15202 and will bring more soon.  I appreciate it more every day, and a summary post like yours reveals the great challenge AP had in updating this icon, and how great of a job they did.

BTW, back to the Masthead for you with the wonderful Salmon dial... I really want to add one of those.

We are looking forward to that in-depth review, Michael

Perhaps you might like to select and compile comments made on the forum by some of us as well about the 15202 "40th".
After one week of ownership, it keeps growing on me. This Jumbo is so perfect and so so so wearable. Looking at the dial in the sun is more than fascinating, it is becoming addictive.
Like others have said, I think that no photo nor description can replace the sensation of actually touching this watch, playing with it and wearing it. Putting these sensations (known and shared by us members of the "club") into words is a challenge, but one that i am sure is just up to your skills.

Thank you very much, Orangedial, for the excellent and very enlightening post about many of the different versions.

Frank

Thank you Frank! I'm glad that...

WOW! Thanks Michael for the Masthead :D

Can't wait to read your review of the new 15202ST. Will you include info on the subtle dial changes on this new model?

Wonderful summary!

 By: respo : March 5th, 2014-11:27

Thanks for posting this summary of the Royal Oaks.

Here is one that you may not have seen and handled:

This is the 15002, a transitional model, the last series produced with a solid case back and in production more or less concurrently with the Jubilee series (like your salmon dial model).

Here it is on the right above, next to a new 15202, and one can see that the new 15202 appears a bit more substantial than the former solid case back series.

Thanks again for this interesting summary.

Best,

respo

Thanks Respo! That 15002 is ever elusive...

and I'm glad you have found a perfect sample of it. The thinness of this reference is still unrivaled in the entire series of RO jumbo, and the best attribute in my personal opinion. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison smile

Great summary and write up

I needed this. Gives me a lot more information and history of the Royal Oak. Some here know I've been dreaming and contemplating on one for a while now, and I've decided to take the plunge with the 15450, simply because I like the size and fit, and the silver white dial and how it captures the light. That will arrive this Friday and I will share some pictures when it does.

Yes! Congratulations, Richard.

I have had this decision in the back of my mind and am glad you selected the right Royal Oak for you.  That is what it is all about!

I do not want to threadjack Wayne's wonderful post here; please make a new post of your 15450 when it arrives.  Very happy for you my Friend.

SUPPLEMENT INFO: AP RO 15450

 By: orangedial : March 7th, 2014-19:00
Thanks Richard! I'm glad you have found YOUR RO wink

I've some experience with 15450 too! How can I miss that out in my earlier post!

Personally, I find the 15450 a very proportionate piece. It is amazing that AP is able to adapt the in-house 3120 movement in various sizes of RO case and yet achieving such harmonious design in all references. 15450 is certainly thicker than jumbo and 14790, but it commands great wrist presence. The angle which the lug ends tapered down to meet the integrated bracelet also makes the entire watch very well balanced. Wearing the 15450 is almost like wearing a custom-shaped bangle. The dial is sporting the new styled hour markers and hands which high highly reflective with their polished surfaces. Overall the watch exudes class.

Some wrist shots and side-by-side comparison with 15400 on my 6.75" wrist… for those who are still considering their options smile

That side by side comparison is great. Also goes to show how AP takes pride in ensuring that there is something for all their customers. That's design and care, if you ask me.

Colour of dial

Just wondering is this that grey dial of the 15450 they sell now or does a white dial of the 15450 exist to?

I'm confused on this one

not an ap guy

yet

I don't know about a grey dial, but all I've seen so far is the white. [nt]

Each version seems to be special in its own way.  I have always considered the Jumbo to be the Perfect AP.

As a 'C' series owner, this is the post I was waiting for...

I learned a lot - the details, e.g. the tapered case back - makes the watch (and my personal choice) even more exciting. You really encouraged me to inspect the different dial finishes (esp. the tapisserie styles) in much more detail than I already did.

Thanks ever so much for your work!
Magnus

P.S.: You post also demonstrates how important it is to search for an example with a (maybe) slightly scratched but never refinished case!

Thanks Magnus! I admire your attention to details...

and your dedication to share knowledge and experiences which was evidence on your recent great posts.

I certainly hope that my personal insights could benefit fellow enthusiasts out there and help them make better informed decisions.
I'm glad with your comments. Thanks again! smile

thanks for this review, very interesting

i fully agree when you say that 36mm size is most suitable for 6" - 6.5" wrist, that the reason why i stay away from jumbo so far...i even think buy an other 36mm (the 25594st)

my sober & discrete14990

More important than the actual size of your wrist

 By: passetemps : March 6th, 2014-05:14
It is the width of the flat part of your wrist.
My belief is that the flat part on the top of your wrist (i.e. the distance from the end of one bone to the end of the other bone) should be 5 cm or more in order to be able to enjoy the Jumbo in full.
Less than 5 cm: it is likely that the edge of the strap will not rest properly on the wrist, but kind of float around it (which is ok, but not optimum IMO).
I believe 5 cm should be in the lower range, so the watch should fit perfectly most wrists.

to get the most suitable RO for yourself!

I own a 36mm RO and I know how great it is. Your Fondation is very special. I've seen a sample here in my city but there are already discoloration on the dial… There's another version I've handled (picture below) and I must say I LOVE it smile
