First endeavour into older pieces

Dear all,

 

I have been lurking around this forum for a long time. Never posting myself, but reading a lot of interesting stories about new and old pieces and occasionally responding. Owning a Reverso GT for 8 years already, I finally made my first step into an older watch; 1940/45 I think. It is a steel watch case housing a calibre 463 with black dial, lugs 16mm,  size is 31-38 mm. A real nice small watch.

On the internet you read often it is a WW2 watch, but I do not think so. The model isn't nor has been military at all, at least as far as I can trace it. Mine for sure isn't as it lacks any markings.

 

I just fell for the simplicity of the dial.

 

If any of you guys knows more background on the watch, you are welcome to educate me.

In the mean time I am happy with my a little addition and will try different looks when testing straps.

Maybe NATO or a black rally type, though that might be hard to find given the size.

I am open to suggestions.

Hi Robert,

I've often seen this model associated with a German Wehrmacht issuance produced under a unique contract with JLC. While I don't believe those watches had unique identifying marks like the British Broad Arrow/Crown, I remember reading that the Wehrmacht models were the only JLCs that had matching case and movement serial numbers (by military request). Did you check to see if these correspond? It could offer some clues if the original story was valid.

This seems like a good Zaf Basha query. He's usually pretty responsive to ID questions on his website provided photos accompany the query.  Let us know more as you uncover the watch's history.

I know that many associate this watch with military...
That might be true, but I never saw any proof of that.

But I do have is proof of that this watch was sold to the public as any other watch in the JLC catalog at that time.

Your watch is Reference 2907 B and was percent in the 1945 JLC catalog.
At that time the price was 64 Franc.



Chrome case with stainless steel case back.

Interesting with this specific reference is the logo on the dial which is Jaeger-LeCoultre, but uses the font face of the LeCoultre logo. No other watch in the catalog uses the same as on this one.

nice to see it in the catalogue too! Interesting point on the logo, I noticed and was curious, but as all of them have that, I put it aside. With this explanation I am even more intrigued. Thank you, I might be adding something in future. I sure will post if I do.

do you have pictures you can share? I saw 'my' model but slightly different (older I presume) once too. But that was clearly a slightly different case were the luggs were concerned. I would love to see such a rectangular housing.
