Friend, one bitten forever possessed, I thought I could never wear anything over 40 mm, the I went to a 42mm, and I wear the 44mm AMVOX2, size is just getting use to. My tip, if the watch is big ot should be worn snug else it tends to float on the wrist, damaging the watch as it bangs and ends up looking unmanageable and sloppy. The Senator Sixties is a trend at the moment the JlC Master Series is a classic guess you decide.The Reverso is another class, rectangular and Art Deco, which again I say wil be in vogue the coming season. First decide on the shape then the watch, as a student I suggest you go with the JlC, speaking with experience it will do you well in the years to come. I have studied extensively and almost bought a Glashutte Panomatic Lunar, I have also visited the factory in Glashutte, but, JlC before a Glashutte is what I say. You could see my wrist shots for an idea. I suggest you look at Zenith, Class on the website, Zenith as far as the movement goes they are simply a "class' apart. They have 2/3 models you might like, reserve de march, dual time, moon phase and the best part is they have them in steel, also Zenith is reworking itself to come in a new avtaar so the prices have been rationalised. web link

Contemplating a new purchase
I have been lurking on this forum ever since I purchased the Master Control Chronograph boutique edition earlier this year - my first JLC watch. I have seen first-hand how helpful the folks are around here, so I was wondering if I could clarify something and seek your opinions on another.
First, I have been wondering what kind of watch I should get next. I have an Omege Speedmaster and the Master Control Chronograph currently. Evidently, I don't need another chronograph! The former has a black dial, and the latter a white one. One is manual and one is automatic. The latter has a date whereas the former doesn't. In many ways, they complement each other, but of course, I lack a number of other complications. Some which appeal to me include the alarm function, the power reserve indicator, or the second timezone. I have also been thinking of a dress watch.
Ideally, I would like a Memovox, but that appears to be out of my budget now. The one I am eyeing is one of the Polaris tributes; the new Memovox is gorgeous, but I feel the styling is very similar to the Master Control Chronograph I already have. I understand that many here love the RdM, but I was thinking if I got a watch with a power reserve indicator, I would want the watch to have a longer power reserve (no offence!). So I have been mulling over a dress watch; in particular, I have been drawn to the Glashutte Senator Sixties (time only), and recently the JLC MUT. I would really appreciate some opinions on whether either of these two would make a good addition, or is there some other watch I have not considered since most of you have been the studying the manufacture for many years whilst I am just a new student.
Secondly, on the MUT, I notice that the current model (ref 1458504) has a display case back. I have noticed what appears to be an older model (ref 145.8.79) selling on the Collectors Marketplace and other forums which has a closed back. Can I find out what the differences are between these two watches apart from the case backs? Am I right to say that the older MUT came with a normal buckle whereas the new one has a deployment buckle? If anyone can tell me the differences, I would be very grateful. And finally, if there are indeed two such watches floating around, could people share which they prefer?

Memovox or UIltra Thin, for me.
These 2 watches are so strongly linked with JLC 's History that the choice of any JLC lover is obvious.
The appeal of the ultra thinness, or the friendly complication?
Not that easy, because the good answer would be " BOTH ".
If you can't afford both, then take one, and the 2d later.
Seriously, it may really end this way, because both the MUT and the Memovox are part of the JLC DNA, and as you did for Chronos, you may think that a Memo, a MUT, and a Master Chrono would be perfect together.
My thought?
Go first for the Memovox, because it is really great to wake up with a nice alarm, too.
Then you will fall in love with the MUT and its very nice Cal 849.

I have the MUT 38MM and also had MUT 34mm before
To me, the MUT is one of the iconic model of JLC, If one has to has one JLC(I doubt it since when one has one JLC one wants more), the MUT is a first choice.
MUT is one of the finest ultra thin watch on the market for a very reasonable price. And you can have the choice of choosing SS or gold version.
Memovox is a worthy choice too if you like the alarm complication.

Have you considered the Reverso line?
Some models are actually quite dressy. And unlike the Memovox they are distinctively different from your two round chronographs.
A word of warning. The Reverso watches are quite addictive. Once you get the bug, there is no easy cure. :P

Thanks Ruckdee, I have in fact thought about the Reverso line previously, and that was going to be my first JLC watch. Unfortunately, having tried the Reverso GMT (and some others), I noticed that it did not sit well on my hand as it's oversized for my small wrist. I will continue to keep my eyes open for a suitable model, since the Reverso is one of JLC's hallmark models. Thanks again for the suggestion!
I see. If the XGT size is too large to be comfortable...
...the GT sized Reverso Duo should be just perfect. Trust me. Find one near you and try it on. It will sit just right on your wrist this time.

The original MUT...
... may be found in several metals and several dial colours (the site 'fundi' will know better which combinations were issued). At least the WG was issued with a display back, if that is important to you. You have a small wrist, you say? The original MUT at 34mm could be worth a look.

To answer the question...
In the '90's, the MUT was a solid back. In '99, the "Master Black" series debuted with an exhibition back. The MUT silver dial with exhibition debuted in 2001 (IIRC). That's why you see both. The older solid back had one advantage: more resistant to magnetism.
