I'm very happy to share with you the results of the 2009 Chronometry Contest, which were just sent to me by my contact at the Manufacture.

JLC took the 2 first places!

The First place for the Cal 978 ( Master Tourbillon )



The 2d place for the Cal 174 ( Gyrotourbillon II )



The 3rd place was take n by a 36 000 vibrations per hour movement.

A wonderful achievement; well earned and well won.  What is impressive is that a number of firms actually took part.  I have to applaud all who took part in the competition for their willingness in having their watches timed and measured against each other.  I also cast shame on other firms who live on their past reputation and glory and who are not willing to compete for fear of loss of reputation.  While I understand that some of the smaller firms do not have the resources available to make an entry they think capable of winning, the larger firms (and we know who they are) prefer to live off their past rather than show their current strength.

An interesting part of this victory is that a BASIC tourbillon won and begs the question concerning the possible inefficiencies in over-engineering the escapement on a long-term trial where the movement is subjected to shocks.  The other interesting facet of this win is that the winning movement is a tourbillon movement that MJLC has had for a considerable time and it can be traced back to the JLC 170 movement that was used by Jaeger-LeCoultre (as well as others such as Vacheron) for Observatory timing contests in the 1940's.  JLC won at Geneva or Neuchatel with the 170 in 1946 I think.

With this victory, MJLC prove themselves worthy winners and they return to the top of the tree as a true manufacture of watch movements.

Congratulations to Jerome Lambert and all the watchmakers at Manufacture Jaeger LeCoultre for this win.

I was able to see it at the Manufacture during my last trip, and yes, you're right, this movement won a prize at a Chronometry Contest; too.

Which is important to say, ad you did it, is that I was surprised to not see some reputable manufactures attending this contest.

I thought the same than you: Kudos to all those who attended, without fear to compete.

Maybe some didn't want to compete with " less noble " movements?

JLC have confidence in their watches, and the experience confirmed that they were right!

Hi Andrew,

Interesting insights on both on the 'old' movement and the (perhaps) 'over-engineered' new movement. But than does it matter? Both look and perform awesome!
In any way a big hands together for JLC! Great that they took up the challenge, competed and did so good.

A 'return to the Observatory Trials' is long overdue.

It will be fascinating to see the results as the range of entrants is eclectic.

I believe he was the winner of the "independents" category, so not competing with JLC et al.

I saw some of the JLC Team this afternoon, and they were very happy.

And proud, too.

Now, it is time to launch a(nother) Chronometric piece!

JLC and some other big names played the game, took the risk, and have to be congratulated for that, IMO.
