JLC Atmos clocks
Recently there was a thread on the JLC Atmos clocks and Cazalea shared his experiences with 3 of them in his home, two belonging to him.
Incidentally I have been thinking of getting the basic JLC Atmos recently, the no frills version, just time.
Unfortunately what I read worries me a bit. One of my JLC collector friend in Singapore also told me it's not very accurate and sensitive to moves, children running around.
However another JLC collector friend of mine is very satisfied with his for the past few years
JLC Singapore told me the Atmos clock has to be on a flat surface and from time to time has to be adjusted (which is easy to do and anyone can do it at home).
Any owners with experiences to share on their JLC Atmos clocks? Many thanks in advance!

The thing is that if it was never serviced, after some long years, it may...
Be problematic.
Other than that, if you leave it on a flat surface, without moving it too often, it is not a problematic clock.

I intend to get a brand new Atmos so should be on on servicing at least the first few years 
Just the basic time only or the Moonphase
The Newson is too expensive !
I still have fears about the curious kids at home ....

An Elegant Clock
I have a perpetual/moon phase model, and I love it. It has run constantly for ~8 years. It does "drift" over time; I ignore it unless it gets over +/- 7 minutes, largely self corrects. I have several clocks and appreciate that I don't have to wind this one.

I bought an Atmos from the 1950s...
... two years ago, since then it sits firm on a flat surface at home and it has been just astonishingly accurate. I managed to get it to +1 minute in a month, that's good enough for me ;-)

I bought mine some 11 years ago.
it has been serviced twice. It works well but it's everything but accurate.

It's a nice decoration
but mine is not good enough to show the time. It was a JLC approved watchmaker who brought me the JLC wall stand and fixed it. Later he tried to adjust the watch but without great success.
Anyhow, Atmos is a nice conversation piece when having guests.

It sits on a shelf and has run constantly over those years. I haven't noticed any accuracy issues.

Mine dates from 1954 and has been serviced 3 times so far
My Mum bought it in 1956. It endured the tropical weather of Africa (not a very good idea) and it needed to be serviced just after 2 years. It did not return to Africa and stayed in Europe where it got serviced only twice since then (basically one service every 25 years or so). It got serviced a few years ago when my Mum decided that it needed a new home... It survived two generations of kids and several cats...

Cats are more dangerous than kids
I still remember our cat sitting next to the Atmos and being mesmerized by the balance wheel. I had to grab her by the back and pull her out. I sprayed some pepper around the Atmos and she never dared doing it again.
All an Atmos needs is
a stable place, free from vibrations. A dedicated shelf might be a solution (there is one made in JLC available).
A friend has it for decades, serviced once after some 20 years, and according to him, it de facto does not need adjusting - it is anough to set the time when it changes from summer saving to the winter one and vice versa.
Mine is a young one (7 y only), its support is not absolutely stable, and I adjust the time once a month, once in two months.
Watching the slow pace of the balance wheel is definitely something that brings harmony to your mind -- hope you will enjoy it!

Atmos : Clock that lives on air
Hi Robin, great to see your interest in Atmos. Fascinated by its tag line "The Clock that lives on Air" made my decision to have it almost 8 yrs ago and its amazing as stated by other Purists. Just keep it a bit higher than kids reach. As long as you do not disturb the base it breaths perfectly and runs smoothly without any complain. Sharing normal picture of Classic de Lunar Atmos (avoid the quality as I have to yet get tips from you).

Atmos clocks are often given as momentos of pivotal moments in your life; awards for services rendered; celebratory gifts.
Not knowing this, I just bought the moon one on its visual appeal, about the same time as all these other Purists (who knew?) It's been flawless once I got the timing set it only changes a couple minutes a year.
Now I just have the two again.
As long as you lock the pendulum with this lever, you can safely move it about. And keep it exactly level, as per the bubble on the base shown here.

The other brass Atmos dates from 1950's and was given to me by the people who got it for a wedding present and said it hadn't run for decades. But always on a shelf, clean, etc.
I took it to my repair man, traded him a nice watch lathe for 6 months worth of work and a new "pendulum hanger wire" and a few other things. Perhaps it needs the gas diaphragm changed?
It ran for a couple months and stopped. I guess I should move it but it's next to the other one so the location is ok ... I have other "fish to fry".
Perhaps you were thinking of me vs Nilomis because for a couple of years I had three of them. A fighter pilot buddy gave me his to adjust/shelter while he was going into hospital - he ended up in a care home and after a couple years Jim passed away. I was left in possession of the clock. Good, but not good. I finally tracked down his son, who was a priest in a monastery, and the son was overjoyed to get the clock back as he remembered it from his youth in their home. We swapped it at the funeral, where he officiated for his dad's Navy memorial.
So the nice three-some was broken up.
Now I just have the two again.
