Swatch - "We don't want to produce a mini mobile phone on your wrist"

(Reuters) - Swatch on Thursday unveiled an expanded range of its "Swatch Touch" smartwatch range and additional functions for its watches, but its chief executive said the company was not looking to produce a wearable mobile phone.

"We don't want to produce a mini mobile phone on your wrist," Swatch Chief Executive Nick Hayek told a news conference for the group's full-year results. "Others can do that."


My thoughts

This is where there is a huge delta.  Apple is producing a computer for the wrist and it also happens to tell time.  The biggest market will ultimately be health monitoring and Apple will be well positioned to be in that market.  All the phone type function require an Iphone but the health motoring can stand alone.  The 18 hr battery life is the issue today but they will solve it in version 2.  And of course a fashion accessory.

The Iwatch is not really competing with wrist watches but you only have limited wrist real estate.


Let's wait and see.

Disagree with iWatch being a "computer on the wrist"

Except for a very few features, the Apple iWatch is far from a computer on the wrist.  It is more like a "display terminal" on the wrist since the real computing and communicating is being done by the iPhone in the pocket.

I freely confess that I am a tech geek.  I love gadgets.  I do want the "latest and greatest" in computers.  I am an Apple fan boy with Pods, Pads and Phones.  But I am not tempted at all by the watch.  Not even a little bit.  Wall Street Journal today reported the reaction as "Meh".  My sentiments exactly.  But all of this is just my opinion.  YMMV.

For the larger health monitoring the unit does measurements without an iphone.

So in that sense it is a wrist computer. But as you mentioned the other functions require it to be tethered to an iphone which in effect makes it more of a display and input device. But in both cases not a watch or a device to wear going out to dinner
