Horological Meandering

Hello-
I need your advices and your views to help me pick my next piece. I've never had a perpetual calender and would like to start with something easy to wear with shirt and casual. I have a FPJ & a PP annual calender that sit in the box most of the day but some how my Pam351 and 317 always find their way to my wrist. That pretty much sum up my current position. More specifically, I'm looking at the GO Navigator Perpetual and IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar II, or did I miss out on any candidate at the 20K price range?

it's a yummy choice and I have been comtemplating with a pre-owned offer lately! However, having tried it on wrist at my AD, it just doesn't sing to me like it didn't with Panerai's ceramic!  Don't get me wrong, it looks and feels better in fresh than and the case finish is superior but I kept putting it down and went back to the steel Navigator at the AD!  Besides, I just could justify the mind-numbing price tag with the overly understated appearance.

If you are flexible...you have already named the top 2 choices. The only decision is just which versions to buy.

If you want to expand your horizon, and you don't mind smaller 36mms, JLC and AP QPs are around that range, actually lower,precious metal, but pre own.

36mm would be too small for me...thought about JLC but somehow,the overall package or may be the design just miss something "wow"

I own a iwc port QP....love the watch....but display is small and very "digital" versus the GO. I have that watch for 5 years now, and its still part of my weekly or fortnightly watch. If you rotate your watches, the IWC is perfect with 7 day power reserve. The GO is good if you like clean interface, with simplicity and info on demand.

I think there is a Jaquet Droz QP as well....check it out.

Most of my friends would pick the IWC anyday bços it has the "look"of a perpetual...but I just can't get the GO Navigator out of my head especialy it oversized crown guard which make winding it a joy.
Have not seen any CM for this piece and may be i can assume it keeps their owner happy or there is not a lot of owners to begin with!

Master Perpetual...apparently seen at SIHH this year but no pics of it yet and the price in SS is well within your price range.  If you want a more sporty look then the GO looks great.

Just left my AD and he couldn't say enough about the new Stainless Perpetual from JLC. From what he said it will be approx $17-18,000. Can't wait to see it.

I really like the look and overall design of the Navigator Perpetual.  It provides all of the information associated with a perpetual without compromising the classic navigator design.  For me, though, I find the watch too casual for daily work wear, so it's sits far more than it's worn.  I really do think it's a great design, though, and I prefer it's dial to the dressier Senator (40mm) models.  I should also note it is also very comfortable on the wrist for a big watch (at least by my standards).        

In terms of the IWC, I prefer the simpler 5001 version, finding the dial of the perpetual too cluttered for my taste.  I am also not sure I would like how inflexiblle the movement setting is relative to the GO.

In fact I'm not fully aware of GO's cal.100-7's characteristics...apart from what AD told me that it's the only PC that allows user to go back on (reverse) date setting, and it's instantaneous date change at mid-night?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

With the GO, you can adjust the individual complications, such as the date, without impacting the others.  I believe the IWC works differently with the complications being synched together.  It can be a nuisance if you make a mistake, such as advancing it too far.  I am not sure how problematic that would be, but maybe others more knowlegeable about the IWC would chime in.  This message has been edited by Dr No on 2011-01-31 11:25:38

You'll set the PC datas with the pusher on the JLC, while you'll set them with the crown on the U.N.

The U.N is the only one PC to be set forward AND backward, as far as I know, with, maybe, the Moser.

The JLC offers something very interesting, in case you have a turn over with your watches: The 8 Days power reserve.

To me, the 2 most interesting PCs, in this league of price.

A Manual winding 37 jewels beating at 28 800 alternances per hour.

The same then on the 8 Days Skeleton, and than on the previous 41, 5 mm  8 Days.

Reliable, and accurate.

I just found the skeleton in platinum which I assume is way beyond my budget even for pre-owned!

The case is 40 mm big and 12, 84 mm high.

The movement is the Cal 876, well known as already seen in the A.Lecoultre and Rose Gld PC 8 Days, as well as in RG or platinum skeleted versions.

The distance between the lugs is 21 mm, and 18 at the buckle.

The dial is beige on the RG version and silver on the SS version.

not so sure on the Moon phase dial but if the face was all black it may look better....don't suppose the SS has a black face does it..?
