Horological Meandering

Hi All,

 

We occasionally have posts with watches from films on the different fora. Let’s try and bring a few together in the one place.

 

What are your favourite watch images from films? Which watches work well with the characters wearing them? Which watches seem incongruous with the characters? Do you think these links are good or bad – or does it depend on the film, character, actor and watch? Do they make you want to wear that watch too? Have you seen any 'wardrobe malfunctions' with a modern watch in a period film? How about some television appearances as well?

If memory serves, in the opening scenes of the first Transporter movie Statham wears a Panerai which he consults assiduously until its alarm function sounds, stirring him to action. Which reference is the alarm model?  Amanico would love to have one, to serve three collections (Panerai, diver and alarm) at once!

Simplistic film (of course), but awesome in the special fx and explosions department.  I love watching such films when I need a break from movies where you have to actually use your brain to figure out the storyline (and chick flicks, sometimes a bit overloaded in the relationship and emotion thing).  Thanks!  HAGWE!

It was first time current Ms.F (hijacking MTF expression) and I went to cinema together.
After the projection I was obsessed with watch on Arnie hand so I started to look after it
which also brought me among copious times to Purist page. Result... I fell deeply in love with my wife and PuristS
This piece is one of my all time dream/grail watches and one that brings greatest memories for me.
The other one is from childhood fascinations
I think that picture tells it all ... one of my top 3 all time favorite actors (Eastwood & Pacino other two)
and what a movie I wanted Porsche ever since :0) not to mention Monaco ;0)



to complete holy trinity of movie watches I'll give you the unavoidable Rolex .... Submariner of course...but ....
not Bond James Bond one but King of Cool one

in The Thomas Crown affair (remake), where it fits Pierce Brosnan's character's style well. And the one in Batman Returns, with the bat on the back.

I agree that the Reverso suited Brosnan as well as his character in the Thomas Crown remake. Any idea what Steve McQueen wore in the original film?

Reverso's also appeared in Bitter Moon (Peter Coyote, Oscar), The Fugitive (Harrison Ford, Richard Kimble) and Paperback Romance (Anthony LaPaglia, Eddie Mercer).

Some watches seem to be so closely linked with certain characters, particularly for franchise films like James Bond with Rolex and Omega. Some actors, like Arnold and Sylvester are closely linked with brands (but I do like the Stallone image with AP - is that a wardrobe malfunction?).

some of the watches featured in film (weather they be paid placements or incidental) seam conspicuously out of place.

Such as in the first Iron Man movie Robert Downie Jnr wears Bvlgari.  It is very conspicuously shot by the director John Favreau.  In the second Iron Man Jaeger LeCloutre is featured just as heavily.  This doesn't fit as well for me as the character of Tony Stark all about bling and Bvlgari is a much more natural fit. The Batman Returns/Dark Knight JLC tie in is a much better fit IMO.

Getting away from super hero films (which clearly are seen by the watch brands as desirable Paid Product Placement opportunities) a lot of action movies where the character is supposed to be a government employed tactical operator yet he wears a super luxury brand such as AP or to a lesser extent Panerai don't have authenticity to me. To me a more tool watch focused but still aspirational brand would suit these characters better such as Omega, Rolex or even B&R. However the exception to this is total "suspend disbelief action adventure" films like the Expendables where it is just eye candy to see all those hot rods, bikes and Panerai together. The new Wall Street movie is one long watch ad with IWC on the wrist of Shia LeBeouf, a vintage Cartier Santos for Gordon Gecko (Douglas) in the opening scene and Vacheron Constantin on Josh Brolin. That plus the suits were the high lite of the movie for me.
