Horological Meandering

Dear all,


      Wondering wht r the best looking crown design there is in ur opinion?  maybe its just me but i often find crowns boring as most r iterations of the onion shape design. While classic, sometimes just not "special" enough to par with the case body. I recently encountered an absolute dream piece-curtsy of THE Purists and if i have to find anything thats not to my awe is its rather plan crown design.

      In the perfect world i prefer no crown or hidden crown as it retain perfect shape of the case like the Freak 1, i also like Journe's small crown. & i actually drawn a few scratches so u know how much i was touched by the experience handling that grail piece the other day, haha.  Naturally, plz do bare with my poor sketching...

Since "no crown" is unlikely, i thought making it as much invisible as possible ll be nice, the tilted side helps when pulling the crown out, but if there r no skip marks then it prob ll have poor water resistenace if to operqate smoothly. unless the material used for the crown could have strong friction material finishing...

like this, or perhaps even more rough...

but then i came up with this saturn's ring design, so u can have a shining ball finishing resounance with the main body of the case & the ring should give enough friction when skrew in & out i guess.
i wonder if the ring is concaved in as in tune to case's waist design ll work...

I always like the smooth crown, but for practical purposes would need friction.

How about some of the crowns by genta?

& on Gefrica its very unique & in tune with the main body!  among others Alain Silberstein has original crowns, cartiers too, Even LV.

To find a matching crown to replace the classic onion crown is no easy task cause its is classic by default especially for timeless design casings.... nevertheless, i want to see crowns getting a bit luv too

Especially for the classic case shape, i would luv to see the onion be replaced by the simple polished sphere like surface if friction is no problem, then a crown really surves as a crown to the watch as its easily stands out, a good example is the bottom of the Breguet, well u get my idea...

 



Here is a perfect example of a "polished" crown, despite functionality, asthetically it work wonderous~

i think it makes good crown for a watch with "sea scene" but more for ladies design though...

Overall, I think as fine watches nowadays are increasingly becoming a form of art, instead of purely functional tools, crowns should contribute to the overall aesthetics of the watch case. Sometimes subtly blending in, such as the one below (although the watch case itself is anything but subtle)

 

... and in other times boldly serves as a cool form by itself, such as this one below:

 

 

Regardless, design of a nice crown is no easy task, and can show that the designer has really thgout about these things.

yet i don't feel they get enough attention especially for old school design pieces!
