I always like the smooth crown, but for practical purposes would need friction.

Overall, I think as fine watches nowadays are increasingly becoming a form of art, instead of purely functional tools, crowns should contribute to the overall aesthetics of the watch case. Sometimes subtly blending in, such as the one below (although the watch case itself is anything but subtle)
... and in other times boldly serves as a cool form by itself, such as this one below:
Regardless, design of a nice crown is no easy task, and can show that the designer has really thgout about these things.
