Horological Meandering

Dear Purists,

I have in mind the purchase of a new watch - a German watch, this time, and I'm hesitating between Lange and GO.

I read as much as I could from both fora but still could not make my mind.

Even worse is the fact that I can not find out any price list for Lange (hope to get one soon from a friend living in another country).

Meanwhile, GO is officially distributed here so I could see some models in the metal and my choice went to the Panomaticchrono in RG.

Any advice ???

 

And something else worth mentioning: no way to wear anything larger than 42mm (well, 40mm would be even better).

Apart from size, what are you looking for in a watch, style (formal, sporty, crazy), functions(date, chrono, other) and color(rose, white, yellow)?
I can make some suggestions, but they'll be more useful if we know a bit more

The Panomatic Chrono is available in a 39.2 mm case, and my personal favorite is the limited edition with a russet brown dial . . .

I think you'll be glad to have one. I have found that ownership of Lange has changed my standards. Once I became accustomed to its fine points of design and finishing, I simply did not want another display-back watch. I don't think Glashutte would have the same effect.

Well now, I'll start with the easy part: for Art - I've seen the model with the black dial (no carbon, no red markings). It was breathtaking... but I must admit the one with the russet brown dial is more elegant (and understated). Just wish it had the guilloche dial of the black version. I've seen the (combined) picture of both in your post... now which one am I supposed to opt for (anyone buying a kidney, folks ?).

Well, probably the brown dial will win,  I'm buying watches for myself, not for the public so this will the one to go for if I finally decide for GO.

For mkvc - while I do my best to understand personal preferences I would still like to read some more objective arguments. I appreciate your feelings but there is not much concrete information I can gather from your answer, except for your qualification on the finishing. No offence, I hope !?

aaronm: well now, let's take a beep breath and start:

1.  Style ? I like elegant watches. I would not call them "formal" but I have only two sport watches in my humble collection (I call them "my sins" -or my Sinns, if you prefer ). I like a legible dial - cluttered or not, I want to read the time without stress. I like "non-standard" time displays (I have a Chronoswiss Chronoscope and a Chronoswiss Delphis).

2. The functions ? Well, a date would be appreciated. A second time zone is "nice to have" but I can live without (I don't travel across the planet very much, at least not anymore). An annual calendar is a very good thing - no need to correct the date 5 times a year. Other complications ? Well, I would not mind a chrono (not that I use it very much but the counters look nice << silly me>> ). Moonphase ? Who gives a devaluated US$ cent about it ? Well, there is more to say about tourbillons (in a wristwatch) and (almost inaudible) minute repeaters but I would rather not get banned from these fora  

3. Color ? No particular opinion. Sorry for using a non-watch analogy but I won't buy a bi-color brown/beige Ferrari nor a yellow Bentley. Yes, the other way around would do... So, depends on the watch, dial color, etc. One point though: not fond of platinum watches - just don't get their point when I can get the same color (well, almost) and durability in a WG watch and pay much less.

. . . tends, in my humble opinion, to foster satisfying long-term ownership. The more elaborate and saturated designs are purposely stimulating and spectacular, which undoubtedly offers a higher level of aesthetic intensity. My preference is to make purchasing decisions based on the premise that the watch will be kept indefinitely, rather than as a commodity that might be parted with . . . that outlook has it's downside as well, I'm sure, but it makes for a more pleasurable experience. I will try to coerce the AD into ordering the russet brown dial version - nothing compares with an evaluation "in the metal" - but it won't be easy since the watch is expensive and they would not like to keep it on stock (just in case I finally decide for the black dial).

Apart from this, I fully agree with you. As I said I buy for myself and, in many years, I only sold two watches (and I still regret one of them).

What puzzles me somewhat is the lack of reaction from GO/Lange passionates; I expected more opinions and arguments. But well, seems that Lange loses for lack of supporters.

It is elegant and has an unusual time display. Aside from the fact that it is not uncommon now, given Lange has made it for 10 years and counting, it is still a magnificent watch.
